Labour Time – Life Time

Ever since the beginning of industrialization the fight for the reduction of working hours was considered the way out of the “kingdom of necessity”. It was only in the 1980s, in the course of a decentralized organization in worldwide networks, that the paradigm changed to more flexible forms of working time management. This is no longer an issue of the collective actors alone but also of the individuals who have to cope with the increasing time flexibility in a socio-structurally differentiated way. From trust-based working hours to on-call duty, from the core workforce with a 35-hour week to temporary work: the contemporary organization of working time took since long already various forms. In addition, the ongoing economic crisis leads in many European countries to forced over-employment and under-employment at the same time.

At the same time the topics are changing under which the problems of the “flexible character” in balancing different aspects of life are discussed in (human resource) management, psychology and sociology. Role conflicts, the balance of work, free time and family or burnout as a possible consequence are keywords which show that work and work time cannot be separated from life time.

In the special issue, we would like to discuss our topic in an adequately broad and interdisciplinary way. We are particularly interested in questions such as:

  • Disparities of working time and desired working hours in the course of time
  • Quantitative and qualitative working-time regimes
  • Time-related stress and wealth in time
  • Balancing life domain work conflict
  • Models of labour time re-distribution
  • Externalities of problematic working time arrangements, e.g. influences on family life, happiness, fertility etc.

Full papers for this special edition of ‘management revue’ must be with the editors by July 31st, 2014. All submissions will be subject to a double blind review process. Please submit your papers electronically via the journal submission system using ‘Labour Time – Life Time’ as article section.

Call for Contributions: work-in-progress symposium for PhD students

Call for Contributions for the work-in-progress symposium for PhD students at the University of  Southern Denmark in Sønderborg on September 17, 2014.

Linked to the Workshop on “Clusters in the Context of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Smart Specialisation Strategies & Regional Development” to be held at Flensburg University on September 15 and 16, a work-in-progress symposium for PhD students will be held on September 17 at the University of Southern Denmark.
In the workshop as well as the PhD symposium we are particularly interested in developing new knowledge in the area of firm clusters with regard to a resource-oriented perspective on clusters bringing together a wide range of multidisciplinary and cross sectoral approaches. The workshop in Flensburg is held as a combination of keynote speeches and paper presentations in highly interactive sessions.
The PhD symposium consists of two parts. In the morning the PhD students are invited to participate in two lectures and in the afternoon they may present their work in progress.

 Das Begriffspaar “Peripherie” und “Zentrum” erschließt nicht nur die sozial-räumliche Dimension von Arbeit. Darüber hinaus soll es um die Positionierung von Arbeit im Raum sozialer Ungleichheit gehen, der nicht nur durch Einkommensunterschiede, sondern auch durch ungleiche Verteilung sozialen und kulturellen Kapitals charakterisiert ist. Zum Verständnis der Genese und Entwicklung sozial-struktureller Ungleichheit ist darüber hinaus die Zentralität von Organisationen in der Gesellschaft zu berücksichtigen.

Vom Wanderarbeiter über Mitarbeiter mit Behinderungen und Filialleiter in der Provinz reicht das Spektrum peripherer Positionen. Wohingegen schlechtbezahlte Praktikanten im renommierten Architekturbüro, Chefsekretäre in der Zentrale oder Industriemeister im Stammhaus in bestimmter Dimension zentrale Positionen einnehmen. Organisationsgröße und Kontrolle über kritische Ressourcen des Wirtschaftslebens moderieren Arbeitsbedingungen, Karrierewege und Einflusschancen der Beschäftigten. Doch auch jenseits der Welt der Organisation finden sich die strukturierenden Kraftlinien von Peripherie und Zentrum im Feld der selbständigen und der freien Berufe vom Toilettenmann, der Künstlerin, dem Arzt oder der Rechtsanwältin und ihrer Lebenswelten.

Die Exploration der skizzierten Felder bedarf der theoretischen Anleitung. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen jedoch nicht theoretisch konzeptionelle, sondern primär – quantitative und qualitative – empirische Arbeiten aus den Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, ebenso wie aus den Kulturwissenschaften.

Die Tagung interessiert sich wie immer auch für methodische Fragen. Im Kontext unseres Themas sind dies u.a. Methoden der Regional- und Netzwerkanalyse, aber auch Instrumente zur Erhebung qualitativen Datenmaterials, welche Auskunft über Peripherie und Zentrum in durch Organisationen geprägten Feldern geben.

Beiträge können in Form von Abstracts oder als Full Paper bis zum 31. August 2014 eingereicht werden.

While the PEPPER reports give an overview over the spread of employee financial participation (EFP) and the legislation in the different European countries, there have only been a few conferences and workshops addressing a broad perspective on research into this topic. In January 2014 the conference ‘Taking Action: Promotion of Employee Share Ownership (ESO)’ promoted an ongoing debate on EFP in Europe. The conference highlighted the positive impact of employee share ownership on employees and the organisation. The results were concrete policy options to further promote EFP at EU level. The idea for this book arose one year before during the workshop ‘Dimensions and Perspectives on Financial Participation in Europe’ which brought together leading researchers in the field of EFP (Andrew Pendleton, Erik Poutsma, Jens Lowitzsch, amongst others) presenting their recent studies and showing the broad perspective and different research approaches to the topic.

To contribute to the ongoing political and scientific debate the main purpose of the book is to produce a systematic overview of the employee financial participation field, providing a state of the art perspective and highlighting unanswered questions and opportunities for further research on EFP in European countries. It is intended to tie the empirical and theoretical discussion together. Chapter proposals from various disciplinary perspectives (management, psychology, sociology and economics) and methodological approaches (qualitative and quantitative as well as theoretical contributions) will be welcome. All units of analysis (individual, group/team, business units, the organisation and the interrelation between them) are appropriate. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Country Reports:

  • Dimensions and perspectives on financial participation in Europe on a country level (e.g. using recent (panel) data sets)
  • Comparative dimensions and perspectives on financial participation (comparing two or more countries) also drawn from non-European countries/regions

Case Studies:

  • Individual and organizational perspectives on financial participation, including
  • The range from employee share ownership plans to co-operatives and employee-owned enterprises
  • The role of trade unions and work councils and social partners
  • Development and consequences of psychological ownership, social capital, organisational and individual identification inter alia

Submission Procedure

  • Submission of 1-2-page chapter proposal to both editors: 15 July 2014
  • Notification of acceptance: 30 August 2014
  • Submission of chapters (max. 10.000 words): 15 December 2014

Eine erhöhte Verfügbarkeit von Arbeitskraft auch außerhalb der „Normalarbeitszeit“ bis hin zur ständigen Erreichbarkeit wird heutzutage branchenübergreifend oftmals erwartet. Arbeit auf Abruf bzw. Rufbereitschaft sind dabei zwei konkrete Modelle flexibler Arbeitszeiten, die Unternehmen nutzen, um dieser Anforderung gerecht zu werden. Doch wie verbreitet ist Rufbereitschaft und welchen Stellenwert hat diese Arbeitsform für Unternehmen? Und welche Auswirkungen auf die Beschäftigten sind durch Arbeit in Rufbereitschaft zu erwarten?

Ausgehend von diesen Überlegungen ist unser Forschungsprojekt dem Ziel nachgegangen, praxisorientierte Antworten auf die zentrale Frage zu erhalten: Wie kann Rufbereitschaft im Sinne der Arbeitnehmer und Arbeitgeber möglichst gut gestaltet werden? Im vorliegenden Sammelband werden die Befunde des durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und vom Europäischen Sozialfond (ESF) geförderten Projekts „Flexibilität und Verfügbarkeit durch Arbeit auf Abruf“ (RUF) präsentiert und durch Fallbeispiele illustriert, in denen Erfolgsfaktoren und Barrieren bei der Implementierung und Ausgestaltung von Rufbereitschaft identifiziert und diskutiert werden. Darüber hinaus werden Konzepte für eine betriebliche partizipative Arbeitsgestaltung vorgestellt sowie arbeitsrechtliche Aspekte diskutiert.

ReMaT – Research Management Training for Early-Stage Scientists on 13/14 May 2014 in Brussels

TuTech Innovation in cooperation with Brussels Office of the Helmholtz Association will offer a ReMaT – research management training – workshop that will take place on * 13/14 May 2014 * in Brussels at the premises of Brussels Office of the Helmholtz Association.

This ReMaT workshop is designed for early-stage researchers, particularly PhD candidates from the 2nd year onwards. The idea of European networking is very much embedded in the concept, and we encourage participation from many different countries at the workshop.

ReMaT is an interactive, intensive workshop providing an introduction to research management. It involves two international trainers and is held in English. The modules of the workshop cover exploitation of knowledge and entrepreneurship, acquisition of grants, intellectual property rights and the management of interdisciplinary projects. They are delivered in such a way that it challenges participants to consider different perspectives on how they might use their PhD education in a variety of career paths, and convince others to hire them.

The concept has been conceived and developed by a partnership comprising the Brussels Office of the Helmholtz Association, the Science Enterprise Centre at Oxford University’s Said Business School and TuTech Innovation.

ReMaT invites PhD candidates and postdocs in natural sciences, medicine and engineering from any research institution or university to apply for one of the 25 places. The participation fee is 535 Euro (VAT included) and includes the information package, lunch and coffee breaks as well as the networking event in the first evening.

TuTech Innovation which is organising the workshop was founded in 1992 as the technology transfer institute for the Hamburg University of Technology. We are offering services regarding participation in EU funded programmes especially for publicly funded universities and SMEs. The mission of the Brussels Office of the Helmholtz Association is to help increase the participation of Helmholtz Research Centres in European research projects.

Innovation Management and Innovation Networks

Innovation is the creation and transformation of new knowledge into new products, processes, or services that meet market needs. As such, innovation creates new businesses and is the fundamental source of growth in business and industry and can be the key driver for the creation of more sustainable economies and company strategies.

The ability to generate and sustain innovation has become critical for companies as markets grow more global, open, and competitive, and as customer expectations grow more diverse and demanding.

This special issue wants to cover the current issues in innovation management and innovation networks and is interested in topics like:

  • The impact of new sustainability requirements on the dynamic capabilities that a firm should develop and sustain to remain innovative and therewith competitive in turbulent environments. In particular, which new innovation capabilities are required to integrate environmental, social and financial objectives?
  • How, and under what conditions, do entrepreneurs in developing countries innovate? And what can be done to support innovation by entrepreneurs in developing countries?
  • Balancing capability building for radical and incremental innovations. Incremental innovation capabilities consist of skills and competences that refine existing products, while radical innovation capabilities are covering skills which are needed to significantly transform existing products or services. What kind of learning creates capabilities needed for the generation of incremental or of radical innovations? What kind of lessons can be taken respectively how to manage the process of developing capabilities in innovation management?
  • Analysis of innovation networks: Economic operations and thus innovations are embedded in social relations and structures. Therefore, the organizational units that create innovation are not individual businesses, but usually networks. From a resource point of view, networks hold a variety of advantages for their members, such as access to material and immaterial resources, information and knowledge. How can the new role of intermediaries as an architect of collective exploration and creation of knowledge in open innovation be described? What are the key variables in the process of managing innovation networks? Any kind of discussions and analysis of innovation networks are welcome.
