Call for Papers: Achte sozialwissenschaftliche Promotionswerkstatt Rhein-Ruhr am 29. und 30.04.2021 in Duisburg

Die sozialwissenschaftliche Promotionswerkstatt Rhein-Ruhr richtet sich an Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aus sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen sowie angrenzenden Fächern, die an einer Dissertation mit Bezug zu mindestens einem der folgenden Themenfelder arbeiten: Arbeit, Arbeitsmarkt, Arbeitspolitik, Bildung, Ungleichheit, Sozialstaat und Sozialpolitik.
Im Rahmen der Promotionswerkstatt besteht für die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, ihre im Entstehungsprozess befindliche Arbeit vorzustellen und mit erfahrenen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern sowie anderen Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden intensiv zu diskutieren. Sowohl theoretisch-konzeptionelle als auch empirische oder sozialpolitische Arbeiten sind gleichermaßen erwünscht. Im Zentrum der Promotionswerkstatt steht die Diskussion laufender, noch nicht abgeschlossener Promotionsvorhaben. Wir begrüßen daher insbesondere Bewerbungen von Promovierenden, die ihr Thema bereits definiert haben, aber noch nicht im Abschluss ihrer Arbeit stehen.

Interessierte Promovierende können sich um eine Teilnahme bewerben, indem sie bis zum 31.10.2020 eine Zusammenfassung ihres Vorhabens (maximal 3.000 Zeichen) einreichen. Eine Entscheidung über die Annahme des Vorschlags fällt bis zum 15.11.2020. Angenommene Bewerberinnen und Bewerber müssen dem Organisationsteam dann bis spätestens 28.02.2021 einen zusammenhängenden Aufsatz (maximal 60.000 Zeichen) zusenden, der das Promotionsvorhaben beschreibt und ausgewählte (ggf. vorläufige) Befunde präsentiert.

Im Rahmen der Werkstatt an der Universität Duisburg-Essen präsentieren die ausgewählten Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer in maximal 20 Minuten wesentliche Aspekte ihrer Arbeit. Jeder Beitrag wird anschließend durch eine/n erfahrene/n und fachlich ausgewiesene/n Wissenschaftler/in kommentiert, bevor die Diskussion für alle Beteiligten geöffnet wird. Während der anderthalbtätigen Veranstaltung haben die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer zudem in den Pausen und beim gemeinsamen Abendessen die Gelegenheit für weitere Einzelgespräche und zur Vernetzung. Ein anregender Abendvortrag rundet den ersten Tag der Promotionswerkstatt ab.

Die sozialwissenschaftliche Promotionswerkstatt Rhein-Ruhr wird gemeinsam vom Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Institut (WSI) der Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, Düsseldorf sowie dem Institut Arbeit und Qualifikation (IAQ) und dem Institut für Soziologie (IfS) der Universität Duisburg-Essen organisiert. Course Overview:

The PhD course deals with research methods that can be applied in scientific research within various business disciplines. The focus of the course is rather applied: students who have successfully finished the course should be able to apply (multivariate) analysis methods at an advanced level in scientific research. For each topic, a full-day lecture will be used to explain that particular method and to learn about conducting the analyses. There will be four topics, each with a lecture and an assignment (see below).

The course is open for students from outside Hamburg, from other departments within the Business School, and junior faculty members (max. 15-20 participants). In principle, participants could sign up for all sessions / the entire course, or cherry-pick the topic(-s) that they like.

Course Overview:

This course is designed to lay the foundations of good survey-based research in different areas of Business Administration. It aims at (1) familiarizing students with key issues in designing surveys and equipping them with the necessary practical skills to implement and execute surveys efficiently, and (2) teaching them how to address various challenges related to the analysis of survey data. The course provides students with an overview of the survey research “tool box”. The course will take the form of four all-day workshops, with an emphasis on student participation. Presentations on key issues related to the design, implementation, and execution of surveys as well as to the analysis of survey data will be accompanied by practical demonstrations, in-class exercises, and assignments

Special Issue

SMEs play a significant role in economic development. They stimulate competition and create jobs by developing new technologies and products. However, SMEs’ are often prevented from realizing their potential due to internal and external constraints. To deal with these constraints, on the one hand, international, national and regional policies support a number of initiatives to assist SMEs’ growth and development. On the other hand, the dynamic competitive landscape of the twenty-first century is highlighting an increased need for SMEs to emphasize the managerialization of their organizational structure and processes as well as the professionalization of individuals involved in the organization to ensure long-term survival and growth.

Research on managerialization has shown, that SMEs are characterized by a lower adoption of managerial processes, because of the strong linkages between manager and company. In addition, there is a lack of management knowledge at different levels. It is commonly highlighted that the management in these firms is characterized by some degree of informality and that individual and social control systems are more suited to these enterprises, due to common shared values and languages, informal relationships, etc.

In addition, decisions in SMEs are also determined by the institutional and contextual factors and in consequence how much of their potential is realized (e.g. innovation). The Nordic context and their countries’ business systems have during the last few years served as exemplary models for practitioners from business, politics, and research. The Northern European countries are among the most competitive economies, have a well-developed welfare system and a large public sector. These qualities have raised an increased interest both among practitioners and scholars alike to understand the “success” mechanisms of the Nordic business systems.

Based on these considerations, the purpose of this special issue of management revue – Socio-Economic Studies is to enhance our understanding of management practices in SMEs from a Nordic and comparative perspective. Topics may include, but are not limited to the following issues:

  • What institutional conditions determine management practices in SMEs?
  • What is the role of managerial mechanisms and professional managers in SMEs and family firms’ development and growth?
  • How do social- and environmental considerations influence management practices in SMEs in a Nordic context?
  • What is the role of HR in developing management practices in SMEs?
  • How does talent management impact SMEs’ development and growth?

management revue – Socio-Economic Studies is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary European journal publishing both qualitative and quantitative work, as well as purely theoretical papers that advance the study of management, organization, and industrial relations. Management Revue publishes articles that contribute to theory from a number of disciplines, including business and public administration, organizational behavior, economics, sociology, and psychology. Reviews of books relevant to management and organization studies are a regular feature.

Deadline

Full papers for this special issue must be submitted by 30 September 2020. All contributions will be subject to double-blind reviews. Papers invited to a ‘revise and resubmit’ are due 31 March 2021. The publication is scheduled for the issue 3/2022. Please submit your papers electronically via the online submission system using ‘SI Management in SMEs’ as article section.

Submission Guidelines

Manuscript length should not exceed 10,000 words (excluding references) and the norm should be 30 pages in double-spaced type with margins of about 2.5 cm on each side of the page. Further, please follow the guidelines on the journal’s homepage.

Abstract and Learning Objectives

Meta-analyses have become increasingly popular in many fields of the social sciences incl. business and management research. The results of meta-analyses attract substantial interest by both scholars and practitioners, as indicated by high citation numbers and widespread dissemination of meta-analytic findings in the media.

By summarizing results drawn from a set of studies concerning a specific topic and by discovering and explaining consistencies and inconsistencies of those results, meta-analysis is an essential step in the process of knowledge accumulation, theory building and theory testing in science, linking past research with future scientific endeavors.

The course targets researchers who are interested in understanding, conducting, and publishing meta-analytic research. Participants of this course will learn how to conduct and publish a high-quality meta-analysis in the area of management and business research. To this aim, the course follows a step-by-step procedure that covers the entire meta-analysis research process, including problem formulation and definition of a research question for a meta-analysis, literature search, study and effects coding, data preparation and analysis, and reporting and publishing. Participants will further learn how to evaluate meta-analyses in the business and management literature and to follow the respective methodological discussion about meta-analyses in their field.

Contents: Writing an academic text is a complex task. It requires knowledge of a range of accepted writing conventions, as well as the ability to construct sentences which are not only idiomatically and grammatically correct but also suitably connected to one another. An awareness of the requirements and a degree of practice are necessary.

This workshop is primarily for people who are in the process of writing an academic text in English – a proposal, abstract, article, thesis etc. It provides the opportunity to obtain individual feedback on a text which you submit prior to the workshop. In the workshop, assistance will be given to enable you to self-correct any issues which have been highlighted (structure, understanding, logic, language etc.). In addition, an overview of the important characteristics of academic English writing will be discussed. If required, exercises will be available to highlight topics such as academic style (formality, impersonal and objective language, passive voice, caution, nominalisation); structure a sentence, paragraph and document level; reporting verbs and their forms; coherence and cohesion; and citation and reference styles.

A requirement of students: Please supply a maximum of 2 pages of text at least two weeks before the workshop begins. English language skills at CEFR level B2/C1 are required.

Contents: In this course, participants will learn to use graphical and statistical tools to visualize and estimate models, in which spatial interaction places an important role. Besides presenting the general logic of spatial modelling approaches, a strong focus lies on illustrating the potential for applied work with these tools in the software package STATA. The module is structured as follows: After a brief introduction, different research settings in business and social sciences are outlined, which may call for the explicit use of spatial estimation techniques, for instance, in order to identify the importance of network and neighbourhood effects. This is followed by some practical applications on how to measure and visualize the degree of spatial dependence in variables. The module then introduces course participants into the field of spatial econometrics and students can work with hands-on applications on the basis of different data sets. Finally, a link to spatial panel data models will be given to close the course.

Course Tools: Please bring your laptop computer. STATA can be installed at the beginning of the IRWS. Licenses will be provided. Datasets and STATA ado-files will be provided ahead of the course and should be installed on the participants’ computers. Introductory readings will be provided to registered participants at approx. 4-6 weeks ahead of the course (see examples).

Contents: The course teaches how to fit multilevel regression models with the statistical programming language R. First, simple (generalized) linear regression models are introduced to show important basic principles of modelling, like simple regression, interaction terms, non-linear relationships between predictors and outcome (polynomial and spline terms). Later, the application of these principles in a multilevel framework is demonstrated. Furthermore, graphical representation of complex mixed models is covered that help communicate complicated models in a simple way even for a broad audience that is less familiar with such modelling techniques. Successful participation requires basic knowledge of regression modelling techniques. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops with the free software R (www.r-project.org/) and RStudio (www.rstudio.com/) installed. All source code to run the examples is provided in preparation for the course.
