University of Hamburg – Behavioral & Experimental Economics (PhD Course)

Objectives:
The main goal of this course is to introduce the design and implementation of both laboratory and field experiments in various fields of Economics and Business Administration. PhD students who have some experience with or who consider to set up an experiment are welcome to participate in this course.

First, we will identify different research questions for a laboratory or a field experiment. We start with discussing critical theory assumptions. We then show how research hypotheses can be inferred from behavioral models and how these hypotheses may be tested in lab or field studies.

Second, participants will critically discuss an experimental paper (either provided by us or self-selected) that is instructive for their own research field.

Third, participants will develop an experimental design and conduct a pilot experiment
that is run in class. We introduce basic statistics along with a discussion how they relate
to the experimental design.

Participants have the option to take a research ethics training (https://about.citiprogram.org/en/homepage/) that becomes increasingly important to conduct research projects with colleagues from the Unites States. All students will learn the basic requirements of a human subjects committee.

Some topics:

  • Identify a suitable research question for an experiment
  • Ethical and scientific standards: historical and scientific reasons, consent requirements,
    human subjects committee, special requirements (children, elderly people, inmates, …), data collection and evaluation
  • Individual and group experiments in the laboratory
  • Surveys and internet experiments
  • Field experiments in cooperation with a company

  • Running a pilot experiment is optional, but encouraged.

Abstract:

Many empirical research projects that use non-experimental data are struggling with the proper identification of causal effects of independent variables (e.g., price, management decisions) on dependent variables (e.g., demand). The reason is that the identification of a causal effect hinges on the untestable assumption that the error term of a model is uncorrelated with the independent variables. If this assumption is not met, a model is plagued by endogeneity. The topic of endogeneity has received considerable attention, and it is probably the most frequently encountered troublemaker in a review process at an academic journal. This course therefore has the goal of making students familiar with the problem of endogeneity and potential remedies. This implies that it will cover the opportunities and problems associated with traditional approaches (e.g., Instrumental Variable estimation) as well as more recent developments (e.g., Gaussian Copulas). The course will also cover how the data structure (e.g., panel data) can be utilized to address the problem.

Because the literature on endogeneity is often quite technical, this course aims at providing an easily accessible approach to this topic. Special emphasis will also be given to understanding when endogeneity indeed poses a real problem as compared to settings in which endogeneity is less likely to be a real threat to the validity of the findings. After completing this course, students will be able to define and describe endogeneity problems in different empirical settings, they will know how to implement techniques that address endogeneity, and they will be aware of the (dis)advantages of different methods.

In der Woche vom 13.-17.08.2018 wird Herr Prof. Dr. Torben Kuhlenkasper, Professor für quantitative Methoden an der Hochschule Pforzheim, an der HSU wieder einen Blockkurs zur Einführung in die Statistik-Software R geben. Dabei handelt es sich um eine von Statistikern, aber zunehmend auch von Volkswirten verwendete Statistiksoftware, die kostenlos verwendet werden kann und extrem leistungsfähig ist.

Prof. Kuhlenkasper hat den Kurs in den letzten Jahren bereits in bewährter Manier an unserer Fakultät gehalten. Der Kurs wird ganztägig im Gebäude H01, Seminarraum 0301 stattfinden. Teilnehmende werden gebeten, ihren eigenen Laptop mitzubringen. Weitere Informationen zum Kurs finden Sie hier.

Workshop: Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis & reproduzierbare Forschung mit STATA (12.07.2018)

Nationale und internationale Forschungsförderer, aber auch Fachzeitschriften in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften, verlangen immer häufiger, dass die in Projekten und für Veröffentlichungen erzeugten Daten und Analysen öffentlich bereitgestellt werden. Dies soll einerseits der Überprüfbarkeit von publizierten Forschungsergebnissen dienen und andererseits eine eventuelle Nachnutzung der generierten Daten ermöglichen.

Unser Workshop richtet sich vorrangig an Master-Studierende und Promovierende, die am Anfang ihrer Dissertation stehen, mit quantitativen Daten der Wirtschaftsforschung arbeiten und STATA als Software nutzen.

Im Workshop vermitteln wir Informationen und konkrete Beispiele zur Aufbereitung von Daten und Datensätzen, wie sie den Anforderungen von renommierten Fachzeitschriften oder Drittmittelgebern entsprechen. Wir vermitteln einen Überblick über entsprechende Richtlinien von Forschungsförderern, Fachzeitschriften und Fachgesellschaften. Die Vortragsblöcke werden von praktischen Übungen begleitet. Dabei erarbeiten die Teilnehmenden gemeinsam und anhand praktischer Beispiele, wie Datensätze und -analysen beschrieben und dokumentiert sein sollten, um die Reproduzierbarkeit der eigenen Forschung sicherzustellen.

Hinweis: Der Workshop ist keine Einführung in STATA und keine Lehrveranstaltung in quantitativen Methoden. Vielmehr dient der Tag einer Einführung, wie die Replizierbarkeit empirischer Forschung verbessert und somit den zunehmenden Anforderungen an Forschungsintegrität in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften gerecht werden kann.

7th GESIS Summer School in Survey Methodology, August 2018

The program of the 7th GESIS Summer School in Survey Methodology is online and registration is open. The Summer School 2018 will be held from August 2 to 24 at GESIS in Cologne, Germany.

15 courses are scheduled, among them 5 short courses and 10 one-week courses. New to the program are courses on “Pretesting Survey Questions”, “Applied Multiple Imputation”, and “Open Science and FAIR Data”. The courses “Mixed-Mode and Mixed-Device Surveys“ and “Web Survey Design” return to the Summer School program after a break.

Scholarships by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) via CDSS as well as the European Survey Research Association (ESRA) are available to Summer School participants.

Course Overview:
The course will cover methods for drawing causal inference in interventional, non‐
experimental/non‐randomized studies on quality of care with administrative data. In order to control for confounders between intervention and control group, at first simple methods (such as stratification and standardization) as well as advanced methods (Propensity Score Matching, Difference‐in‐Differences, Regression‐Discontinuity Designs) are taught. The course will also give an overview on common risk‐adjustment instruments (generic and disease specific risk‐adjustment scores based on diagnoses or ATC codes) for use with health outcomes.

The course will be split in theoretical and practical sessions. During the practical sessions we are going to implement the discussed estimators with STATA. Hence, a basic knowledge of STATA (data handling, running do‐files, etc.) is a prerequisite for the course. If you are not familiar with STATA you might want to check the online introduction from the UCLA Institute for Digital Research and Education https://stats.idre.ucla.edu/stata/. The relevant estimation commands and ado‐files will be explained during the course; some of them require STATA 13 or higher.

Assessment: Students will have to complete an assignment doing (statistical) analyses of a dataset. Results have to be presented in the form of a short summary paper.

Course Overview & Contents:
The course discusses the basic steps of performing behavioral research. We start with discussing critical assumptions of game theoretic models. We then show how research hypotheses can be inferred from behavioral models and how these hypotheses may be tested in lab studies. Critical design factors of laboratory experiments and the most commonly applied statistical tests will be presented.
We will further visit the Lab at the UHH while discussing options (e.g. eye-tracking) and limits
(e.g. subject pool, size of the lab) for conducting lab experiments at UHH. The course also provides an overview of commonly applied software tools that are used for behavioral modelling (Maple), software for computerized experiments (z-Tree), and statistical analysis (Stata). Ethical aspects of conducting laboratory experiments underpin the theoretical/fundamental part of this course.
Based on these theoretical foundations, participants are asked to design an experiment. The
presentations will be the basis for passing/failing the course. The topic of the experiment is
open. We may also suggest a topic. If this is the case, please send your research interest along
with the registration.

Prerequisites: Basic background in microeconomics, game theory and statistics.

Assessment: Assessment will be based on active participation. Grading for students
of University of Hamburg will be pass/fail.
