YEEES PhD Research Stay Grant: Call 2019
The inter- and transdisciplinary project YEEES is looking for PhD candidates interested in a research stay in one of our partner countries: Germany, Mozambique, Namibia or South Africa (please check our Partner Universities).
Our project especially elaborates on the resilience of cities/ peri-urban areas and entrepreneurship, while focusing challenges in various areas, e.g. agriculture, education, health and transport/mobility.
Are you interested in conducting research in another country for one or two months in one of the following areas? Be part of our project by applying for our PhD Research Stay.
Please be aware that you have to be registered as a PhD Student/Candidate at a University in one of the following countries: Germany, Mozambique, Namibia or South Africa.

Wie sieht unsere Arbeitswelt der Zukunft aus? Siebter Wissenschaftspreis zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses der Volksbank Weinheim Stiftung und des ZEW
Welche Auswirkungen hat die Eurokrise auf den Arbeitsmarkt? Wie können wir benachteiligte Gruppen in die Arbeitswelt integrieren? Lassen sich Familie und Beruf zukünftig noch besser vereinbaren? Der Wissenschaftspreis prämiert auch in diesem Jahr wieder Einreichungen aus einem praxisnahen und breitgefächerten Themenspektrum. Bis zum 31. Oktober 2019 können Arbeiten eingereicht werden, die an einer Universität oder einer außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtung, insbesondere in der Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar (Mannheim, Heidelberg oder Landau), angefertigt wurden.
Die Einreichungen sind an die Volksbank Weinheim Stiftung zu senden. Dissertationen müssen mit sehr gut, Masterarbeiten mit einer Note von 1,7 oder besser bewertet worden sein. Die Bewertung der Arbeiten muss zwischen dem 1. September 2018 und 31. August 2019 liegen. Neben den Promovierenden und Studierenden selbst können auch Professorinnen und Professoren eine von ihnen betreute Arbeit vorschlagen.

VHB-ProDok-Kurs: „Endogeneity in Applied Empirical Research” vom 9. bis 12. Oktober 2019 in Tübingen
Vom 9. bis 12. Oktober 2019 laden wir Sie herzlich zum Kurs „Endogeneity in Applied Empirical Research” von Professor Dominik Papies (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen) ein, der bereits zum dritten Mal sehr erfolgreich in unserem ProDok-Angebot in Tübingen stattfindet.
Abstract
Many empirical research projects that use non-experimental data are struggling with the proper identification of causal effects of independent variables (e.g., price, management decisions) on dependent variables (e.g., demand). The reason is that the identification of a causal effect hinges on the untestable assumption that the error term of a model is uncorrelated with the independent variables. If this assumption is not met, a model is plagued by endogeneity.
The topic of endogeneity has received considerable attention, and it is probably the most frequently encountered troublemaker in a review process at an academic journal. This course therefore has the goal of making students familiar with the problem of endogeneity and potential remedies. This implies that it will cover the opportunities and problems associated with traditional approaches (e.g., Instrumental Variable estimation) as well as more recent developments (e.g., Gaussian Copulas). The course will also cover how the data structure (e.g., panel data) can be utilized to address the problem.
Because the literature on endogeneity is often quite technical, this course aims at providing an easily accessible approach to this topic. Special emphasis will also be given to understanding when endogeneity indeed poses a real problem as compared to settings in which endogeneity is less likely to be a real threat to the validity of the findings. After completing this course, students will be able to define and describe endogeneity problems in different empirical settings, they will know how to implement techniques that address endogeneity, and they will be aware of the (dis)advantages of different methods.

Vom 7. bis 10. Oktober 2019 führt Professorin Catherine Cleophas (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) zum zweiten Mal im ProDok-Angebot den erfolgreichen Kurs „Simulation Modelling for Business Research” in Kiel durch, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen.
Abstract
Business research increasingly considers wicked problems and complex dynamic systems. Analytical models of such problems and systems quickly become untraceable and unsolvable. Given increasing computational power, simulation models provide an alternative tool. They can fuel studies tracing the long-term evolution of systems and comparing the outcomes of alternative scenarios. However, successfully applying simulation modelling for business research requires expertise on applicable simulation paradigms, approaches to model validation and the analysis of stochastic results.

VHB-ProDok: Kurs „Event History Analysis” – 07.-10.10.2019 in München
Vom 7. bis 10. Oktober 2019 führen Professorin Mariaclelia Stefania Di Serio (L’Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milano) und Professor Nikolaus Beck (Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano) zum ersten Mal in unserem ProDok-Angebot den Kurs „Event History Analysis” an der Technischen Universität München durch, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen.
Inhalt
Techniques of event history analysis have proven to be one of the most important empirical research tools in management and organizational research. These methods, stemming from demography and medicine, are best suited for the analysis of dynamic processes that are characterized by the occurrence of discrete events, or in other words: for the analysis of transition processes between two different states of existence. The most prominent transition process in organizational research is, of course, the death of organizations. However, also other events during the life course of organizations that can be summarized as organizational change events are subject to the application of event history analysis tools.
This course aims at providing students with the most relevant techniques of event history analysis. At the end of this course students should be able to understand the theoretical concepts of event history analysis as well as to apply these methods by themselves.
The following topics are planned to be addressed in the course:
- The basic concepts of event history modeling: Duration, censoring,continuous time, discrete time, hazard rate, cumulative hazard rate,density, survivor function
- Non-parametric methods: e.g. life table estimators, Kaplan-Meier-functions
- Semi-parametric and parametric models: Exponential models, piecewise constant exponential models, Gompertz-, Weibull-, log-logistic models, Cox-models
- Time varying covariates and split spells: quantitative and qualitative time varying covariates and splitting, panel data. Different forms of modeling duration dependence
- Recurring event models – organizational change
- The application of panel data: Discrete time hazard rate models, comparison with continuous time hazard rate models
- Unobserved heterogeneity: Fixed effects, stratified Cox-models

VHB-ProDok: Kurs „Bayesian Modeling” – 23.-26.09.2019 in Frankfurt am Main
Vom 23. bis 26. September 2019 führen die Professoren Joachim Büschken (KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt) und Thomas Otter (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main) erstmals in unserem ProDok-Angebot den Kurs „Bayesian Modeling” an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main durch, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen.
Abstract and Learning Objectives
The past 30 years have seen a dramatic increase in the use of modern Bayesian methods that facilitated the development and estimation of theoretically meaningful empirical models in marketing and other disciplines. This course will focus on recent developments and applications of Bayesian statistical methods in marketing. However, the tools and models discussed apply in a wide context of micro-econometric and psychometric applications.
The course targets students who are interested in Bayesian inference with an eye towards adapting existing micro-econometric and psychometric models or developing and estimating new models. Our goal is to develop computing skills so that you can work somewhat more independently from pre-programmed software that sometimes constrains theory development and testing.

Uni Vechta: Zwei Stipendien als Anschub- bzw. Abschlussförderung von Promotionsvorhaben
Die Universität Vechta stärkt ihr Querschnittsthema „Gender & Diversity”. Daher vergibt sie im Forschungsbereich „Bildung und Gender” sowie im Promotionskolleg „Gender Studies” frühestmöglich
zwei Stipendien
als Anschub- bzw. Abschlussförderung von Promotionsvorhaben
mit einer Laufzeit von 6 Monaten (Stipendium „Bildung und Gender”) bzw. 10 Monaten (Stipendium „Gender Studies”) in Höhe von 1.250 Euro monatlich.
Die Querschnittsdimension „Gender & Diversity” der Universität Vechta orientiert sich unter
anderem an den im EU-Rahmenprogramm „Horizon 2020″ dargestellten gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen (,,Grand Challenges”). In diesem Zusammenhang beschäftigt sich die Bildungs- und Genderforschung mit integrativen, innovativen und reflexiven Gesellschaften in einer sich wandelnden Welt. Sie vermittelt unter anderem theoretisches, methodologisches und praxisorientiertes Fachwissen und Methoden empirischer Bildungs- und Sozialforschung im inter- und transdisziplinären Forschungsfeld der Gender Studies.
Die zu vergebenden Stipendien verorten sich in der erziehungs- bzw. sozialwissenschaftlichen Geschlechterforschung und richten sich an Promotionsvorhaben in der Anfangsphase oder im fortgeschrittenen Stadium bzw. in der Endphase der Promotion. Eine Anwesenheit vor Ort wird gewünscht.

VHB-ProDok-Kurs: Managing Interorganizational Relations – Process Views – 16. bis 19. September 2019 in Berlin
Vom 16. bis 19. September 2019 führen Professorin Elke Schüßler (Johannes Kepler Universität Linz) und Professor Jörg Sydow (Freie Universität Berlin) zum zweiten Mal in unserem ProDok-Angebot einen Kurs zum Thema „Advanced Topics in Organization Theory” durch, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen. Dieses Mal liegt der Schwerpunkt auf dem Thema „Managing Interorganizational Relations – Process Views”. Der Kurs findet an der Freien Universität Berlin statt – je nach Interesse der TeilnehmerInnen auf Deutsch oder auf Englisch.
Abstract and Learning Objectives
This doctoral seminar exposes students into advanced theories of organization with a particular focus on process perspectives on the management of interorganizational relations. While interorganizational relations (IOR) are often studied from a rather static, network-analytical perspective or with a focus on bilateral ties, this doctoral seminar is geared towards students that are interested in IOR, in particular of a collaborative nature, as complex process systems that require ongoing practices of their management.
After this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the relevance and forms of IOR in diverse empirical contexts
- Understand the basic pillars of process theories of organizations and be able to apply this thinking to the context of IOR
- Understand core challenges and tensions regarding the management of IOR
- Develop relevant research questions that promise theoretical contributions in the management of IOR
Requirements
Students should be familiar with „classic” management and organization theories such as the theory of bureaucracy, institutional theory, or contingency theory before taking this course.

VHB-ProDok-Kurs: Ethnographic Research – 24. bis 27. September 2019 in Berlin
Vom 24. bis 27. September 2019 führen die Professorinnen Jana Costas (Europa Universität Viadrina Frankfurt an der Oder) und Christina Garsten (Stockholm University) sowie Professor Hannes Krämer (Universität Duisburg-Essen) erstmals in unserem ProDok-Angebot den englischsprachigen Kurs „Ethnographic Research” im Harnack-Haus in Berlin durch, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen.
Abstract
This course addresses PhD and post-doc researchers interested in learning about and conducting ethnographic research. The aim of the course is to teach the methodological foundations of ethnography as well as enable participants to do ethnographic research. The course provides an overview of the history of ethnography, places ethnography in the context of social research as well as looks at the diverse approaches to ethnography – from classic to contemporary ones.
Furthermore, the course focuses on the process of conducting ethnographic research. Key issues concerning research design, research access, data collection and analysis, the role of the researcher in the field as well as the writing up of ethnographic research are addressed.
