CfP: Journal of Business Ethics: Special Issue “Business Ethics in the Post-Communist Societies of Central and Eastern Europe“

This call for papers, which follows on from the last special issue on post-communist societies (Brown, McCabe and Primeaux, 2003) will focus on the developments in ethical standards in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe as over thirty years has elapsed since the demise of the Soviet Bloc. Despite some common institutional features the societies of Central and Eastern Europe have had very different experiences (Hardy, 2014; Myant and Drahokoupil, 2010; 2011) with uneven developments across the region since the collapse of communism. In this special issue they invite papers that explore business ethics situated within the context of the challenges that face these still transforming societies.

The post-communist societies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have experienced radical changes since the collapse of communism. A particular issue for these societies has been the development of new political and economic institutions to meet the requirements of modern European market democracies.

Small selection of the topics:

  • The influence of privatisation and post-privatisation strategies on management behaviour and ethics
  • Leadership, misconduct and unethical behaviour by managers and owners of companies
  • Corporate governance and transparency and corruption
  • The development of local and national government institutions after the collapse of the Soviet Bloc and their influence on managers and organisations

Submission Deadline:

Full Papers: 1stof November, 2019

CfP: Special Issue of Socio-Economic Review

The rise of digital platforms challenges traditional approaches to the organization of markets, work, and consumption and suggests a new economic era some have called the “platform economy.” The aim of this Special Issue is to better understand the socio-economic dynamics structuring the platform economy, with a focus on new “sharing” and gig labor platforms.

Platforms for “crowdsourcing”, “gigwork” and “sharing economy” such as Upwork, Uber and Airbnb organize buyer-seller relations in digitally-enabled marketplaces. These new marketplaces challenge existing economic practices and regulatory standards, disrupting established markets and forcefully creating new ones. A central feature of these marketplaces is the use of algorithms to set and enforce rules that shape the provision of services and labor. Our aim in this special issue is to bring together organizational, consumer, worker and regulatory perspectives on the platform economy to shed a new light on emerging market structures as well as central lines of contestation.

The four themes are “Platforms as Market Organizers”, “User Experiences and Consumption Patterns”, “Working in the Platform Economy” and “Contested Markets as a Challenge for Regulatory Actors and Established Institutions”.

Leerzeichen).

CfP: CMS 2019, Stream No. 2: “Between subjugation and emancipation: Recognizing the power of recognition”

The 11th International Critical Management Conference takes place from June 27th– 29th2019 at the Open University in Milton Keynes. The sub-theme is “Between subjugation and emancipation: Recognizing the power of recognition”. Recognition is an important factor shaping individual and collective well-being, dignity and flourishing, both within organizations and society more generally (Honneth 1996; Fraser and Honneth 2003; Sayer 2007a, 2007b). Giving voice to the complexities arising from these two traditions of thinking about recognition, their stream aims to develop a more fully-fledged notion of recognition at the workplace. The convenors welcome conceptual and empirical papers that deal with questions of recognition at the societal, organizational or individual workplace level and which pay tribute both to the emancipatory and subjugating character of recognition.

Deadlines:

  • Abstracts (max. 1000 words): 31stJanuary 2019
  • Notification of paper acceptance: 1stMarch 2019

CfP: Interactive Research Development Workshop and Conference on Internationalization of SMEs in the Digital Age – Opportunities and Threats

The so called and partly overemphasized “digital revolution” _is certainly affecting the way firms will be organized with regard to value creation and delivery (Tilson, Lyytinen, & Sorensen, 2010; Yoo, Boland Jr., Lyytinen, & Majchrzak, 2012), how they will efficiently manage their production and operations, and how they will engage with their suppliers and customers. With regard to internationalization it will, on the one hand, change the competitive and collaborative landscape dramatically especially through providing opportunities for new collaborative relationships with private and public organizations across the globe (Coviello, Kano, & Lish, 2017). On the other hand, it may render traditional international partnerships obsolete as it will enable newcomers and incumbents to circumvent previously necessary intermediaries and establish direct relationships with customers, suppliers, and complementors.

In particular, digitalization has the potential to impact the main elements of the internationalization process of firms, for example, in terms of timing, pace, and rhythm of internationalization, location and entry mode choices, learning and knowledge recombination, and accessibility of resources and capabilities in home and host markets. It will change firms’ ability to mitigate and manage the liability of foreignness and outsidership (Coviello, Kano, & Liesh, 2017). This becomes especially apparent in the case of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that –fostered by digitalization– will find effective ways to compete with large firms on a global scale through reducing their liability of smallness, i.e. especially their lack of financial and human resources.

Important research questions that may be explored are for example the following: How will foreign entry mode choice or market management modes be affected by digitalization? In which way will digitalization change the organizational structure and the culture of an SME and subsequently its internationalization processes? Will export based on internet sites and platforms that are accessible globally reduce the need to establish foreign service units and operations or does it depend on the business model? Will digitalization ease or impede the search for international business partners? To what extent will digitalization change the way foreign subsidiaries are staffed and managed? Will Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 alter the ways SMEs conduct business on an international level? How will SMEs cope with this challenge as they may suffer from a liability of smallness with this respect? Do SMEs have the financial resources to compete against MNEs as new electronic systems, software, and content has to be developed, adopted, and implemented?

CfP: Necessary Condition Analysis. Method and Applications

Short description:

Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) is a novel methodology, recently published in Organizational Research Methods. The method has already been applied in fields such as innovation, strategy, entrepreneurship, organizational behaviour, and human resource management. Given the novelty of the method the goal of this track is twofold:

• Give a platform to researchers who apply NCA to present their draft papers (contributions based on full paper, competitive sessions).

• Support researchers who have started or intend to apply NCA and help them to develop this towards a publication (contributions based on extended abstract, paper and idea development sessions).

They encourage submissions of advanced research projects (full paper, competitive sessions) as well as work in progress (extended abstract, paper and idea development sessions). Papers are welcome from any field as long as they use NCA either as core method or a complement to other methods.
