Call for Chapters Contributions:
Dimensions and Perspectives on Financial Participation in Europe
(to be published by Nomos Publishing with ISBN and eISBN)

Simon Fietze & Wenzel Matiaske (eds.)

While the PEPPER reports give an overview over the spread of employee financial participation (EFP) and the legislation in the different European countries, there have only been a few conferences and workshops addressing a broad perspective on research into this topic. In January 2014 the conference ‘Taking Action: Promotion of Employee Share Ownership (ESO)’ promoted an ongoing debate on EFP in Europe. The conference highlighted the positive impact of employee share ownership on employees and the organisation. The results were concrete policy options to further promote EFP at EU level. The idea for this book arose one year before during the workshop ‘Dimensions and Perspectives on Financial Participation in Europe’ which brought together leading researchers in the field of EFP (Andrew Pendleton, Erik Poutsma, Jens Lowitzsch, amongst others) presenting their recent studies and showing the broad perspective and different research approaches to the topic.

To contribute to the ongoing political and scientific debate the main purpose of the book is to produce a systematic overview of the employee financial participation field, providing a state of the art perspective and highlighting unanswered questions and opportunities for further research on EFP in European countries. It is intended to tie the empirical and theoretical discussion together. Chapter proposals from various disciplinary perspectives (management, psychology, sociology and economics) and methodological approaches (qualitative and quantitative as well as theoretical contributions) will be welcome. All units of analysis (individual, group/team, business units, the organisation and the interrelation between them) are appropriate. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Country Reports:

  • Dimensions and perspectives on financial participation in Europe on a country level (e.g. using recent (panel) data sets)
  • Comparative dimensions and perspectives on financial participation (comparing two or more countries) also drawn from non-European countries/regions

Case Studies:

  • Individual and organizational perspectives on financial participation, including
  • The range from employee share ownership plans to co-operatives and employee-owned enterprises
  • The role of trade unions and work councils and social partners
  • Development and consequences of psychological ownership, social capital, organisational and individual identification inter alia

Submission Procedure

  • Submission of 1-2-page chapter proposal to both editors: 15 July 2014
  • Notification of acceptance: 30 August 2014
  • Submission of chapters (max. 10.000 words): 15 December 2014
  • (followed by an editorial review)

Management Revue: Call for Papers – Innovation Management and Innovation Networks

Call for papers

Special Issue
Innovation Management and Innovation Networks

Innovation is the creation and transformation of new knowledge into new products, processes, or services that meet market needs. As such, innovation creates new businesses and is the fundamental source of growth in business and industry and can be the key driver for the creation of more sustainable economies and company strategies.

The ability to generate and sustain innovation has become critical for companies as markets grow more global, open, and competitive, and as customer expectations grow more diverse and demanding.

This special issue wants to cover the current issues in innovation management and innovation networks and is interested in topics like:

  • The impact of new sustainability requirements on the dynamic capabilities that a firm should develop and sustain to remain innovative and therewith competitive in turbulent environments. In particular, which new innovation capabilities are required to integrate environmental, social and financial objectives?
  • How, and under what conditions, do entrepreneurs in developing countries innovate? And what can be done to support innovation by entrepreneurs in developing countries?
  • Balancing capability building for radical and incremental innovations. Incremental innovation capabilities consist of skills and competences that refine existing products, while radical innovation capabilities are covering skills which are needed to significantly transform existing products or services. What kind of learning creates capabilities needed for the generation of incremental or of radical innovations? What kind of lessons can be taken respectively how to manage the process of developing capabilities in innovation management?
  • Analysis of innovation networks: Economic operations and thus innovations are embedded in social relations and structures. Therefore, the organizational units that create innovation are not individual businesses, but usually networks. From a resource point of view, networks hold a variety of advantages for their members, such as access to material and immaterial resources, information and knowledge. How can the new role of intermediaries as an architect of collective exploration and creation of knowledge in open innovation be described? What are the key variables in the process of managing innovation networks? Any kind of discussions and analysis of innovation networks are welcome.

This is not an exhaustive list.

Call for Papers “International Journal of Organizations”: Special Issue: Gender, lifelong learning and social class

Guest Editors:
Sue Betts[1] (s.betts@linkinglondon.ac.uk),
Kate Burrell (k.burrell@linkinglondon.ac.uk) Linking London, Birkbeck, University of London
Teresa Torres-Coronas (teresa.torres@urv.cat) Business Department, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain

Learning through information transfer, collaboration and social capital building has always been essential for humans. In today’s world, the continuing-education demands of a changing workforce and the accelerated pace of technological change have increased demands for continuing education and lifelong learning, a concept that has been defined as “all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment related perspective” (European Commission, 2001, p. 9). The recession that has hit Europe over the last years has seen a return to an economy marked by increasing levels of unemployment and social inequality. In some countries unemployment rates and early school dropout are particularly high among women with no educational qualifications and low income people. This is the context in which national, regional and institutional policies towards lifelong learning must be implemented as a crucial factor for both long-term employability (European Commission, 2006) and social inclusion.

GLAS (Social class, gender, participation and lifelong learning) is a multinational European project which is comparing, developing and disseminating best practice, as to methods to facilitate social inclusion and progression of working class individuals and, in particular, mature women. GLAS concentrates in five core themes: accreditation of prior and experiential learning, work based learning, social mobility by widening participation in higher education, community and civic engagement and continuous professional development.

As effective policies for lifelong learning need to be informed and inspired by evidence generated by research the special issue editors encourage contributions to explore lifelong learning policies and strategies through multi-disciplinary perspectives, case studies and theoretical analyses. Quantitative and qualitative empirical papers are welcome.

For this special edition (June 2014) we invite submissions of papers on Gender, lifelong learning and social class including the following topics:

  • Lifelong learning: a class     and gender perspective
  • Recent developments in     the field of lifelong learning
  • Developing a lifelong learning     society
  • The use of accreditation     of prior (and experiential) learning
  • Work-based learning
  • Lifelong learning and social     mobility
  • The social value of lifelong     learning
  • Lifelong learning strategies     and widening participation into higher education
  • Public-private     partnership for lifelong learning initiatives
  • Partnership models and     terms of engagement for work based learning
  • Benefits for learners,     companies and education providers
  • Development,     implementation and impact of lifelong learning policy (institutional     and/or national)
  • Continuing professional     development
  • Continuing professional     development policy and strategies
  • Employee     entitlement and the role of the trade unions and “union learning representatives”
  • Current continuing     professional development provision to support recognition/accreditation of     prior learning and experience, work based learning and lifelong learning.
  • Flexible and creative     learning environments for lifelong learning

Recent studies  and analyses have shown that economic growth in Latin America during the  past decade has been accompanied by an improvement in income  distribution and poverty reduction. The region has also gained ground in  politics (toward democracy), and its governments have implemented  strategies for (global) economic change. However, socio-economic  deprivation in several categories and the persistence of social  inequality, now more intense in large and intermediate cities, challenge  structural economic change and democratic discourse itself.

It  is essential to tackle these inequalities, which threaten not only the  economy but the democracies themselves, by reprocessing social policy  instruments. One challenge faced by democracy is the creation of social  instruments to make the people participants and architects of their  societies’ decisions; such a goal requires equal opportunities, fair  income distribution, and strong and credible institutions.

Equal  opportunities come with a strong state capable of developing a social  policy – by investing in education, healthcare, and housing, and by  developing a labor policy that ensures industrial relations with quality  employment and large workforce participation. At the same time, these  policies contribute to a more equitable income distribution and to an  increased training and knowledge, which enables individuals to  participate more actively in policy making, democracy, and governance.

Taking this  as our starting point, what kind of state is needed for such a  reconfiguration? What are the implications for democracy and social  policy? What kind of state capacity requires an alternative development  model? What is the potential and what are the limits to civil society’s  role in ensuring democracy and correcting poverty and income  distribution inequality?

Sincerely, SASE President Bruce Carruthers

ABEN Conference 2013 – Call for Papers – Submission deadline extended to 31 August

3rd Annual Australasian Business Ethics Network (ABEN) Conference

MANAGING ETHICS ON THE EDGE
Hobart, 2nd and 3rd December 2013
Supported by the Faculty of Business at the University of Tasmania and the Department of Management at Monash University

Call for Papers– EXTENDED DEADLINE for Abstract and Full Paper Submission: 31st August 2013.

Submissions are being invited for the 3rd annual ABEN conference on business, ethics and  business ethics (www.aben.org.au). Bringing academics, critics and practitioners together to discuss and debate the nature, intent, effects and futures of business ethics in Australasia and beyond, the ABEN conference is a key forum  in the region for reflective, engaged and philosophical work in the area. The location for this year’s conference is the Lenna Hotel in the capital of Tasmania, Hobart.

Once again,  the conference is linked with publication opportunities in business ethics and  professional ethics journals (The Journal of Business Ethics Education and  the Australian Journal of Applied and Professional Ethics), as well as Philosophy  of Management, the leading interdisciplinary journal with a focus on  applied philosophy in management. Like the wider network from which it originates, the ABEN conference is inclusive – welcoming submissions that explore business ethics from a range of theoretical, empirical and practical positions and perspectives.

This year, we purposefully link the theme to the notion of managing ethics on the edge, to promote awareness of  the multitude of philosophical issues that mainstream management research  appears to ignore. This raises some interesting questions for ethics teachers and researchers to address. For example:

  • Given the rhetoric around the importance of ethics in business, are moral considerations and values being authentically included in emerging management practices and strategies or do they remain at the periphery of managers’ thinking?
  • Are moral values and competencies becoming part of core learning objectives at all levels of study in University business courses, or do they remain on the periphery? If they are being included, how are they being taught and to what effect?
  • Are existing moral philosophies serving the needs of moral decision making in business and business education? Are there philosophical alternatives to orthodox approaches that have been hitherto peripheral to the field that may serve teaching and practice in more constructive ways?

In writing this call, we espouse a view posited by Philosophy of Management: namely, that management concerns itself with making a genuine positive difference to human life, a difference that is only made possible through thoroughgoing thought.  Rather than being on the periphery of management, therefore, philosophy is central to all management worthy of the name; management is about ‘reason in practice.’ Thus, the ABEN Conference theme also connects with the theme for the ANZAM Conference 2013, which is being held in Hobart on 4-6 December.

Papers are welcomed that  address these questions in the context of (e.g.) Australasian business practice  and education, the place of the employee, the questions of sustainability and  of responsible accounting, as well as the place of human rights in the  workplace.

Please send a 500-word abstract and contact details of all authors, as an email attachment with the title ‘Abstract Submission’ toABEN.Conference@utas.edu.au  by 31 August. Full papers may also be submitted, to be peer reviewed, if required by your funding institution. Authors of accepted abstracts/papers will be notified by the 15th of August.

All details of the conference are available at http://www.utas.edu.au/business/ABEN2013. Registration for the conference is the same as ABEN 2; $A300 (registering before 1 November) and $A380 (registering after 31st September) for salaried persons; and $A200 (before 1 November) and $A280 (after 31st September) for those who are non-salaried/students. Registration opens 30thSeptember. For all inquiries please email ABEN.Conference@utas.edu.au.
