Analyzing and Simulating Dynamics in Social Networks
Die Soziale Netzwerkanalyse bietet Methoden und Algorithmen, Strukturen relationaler Verflechtungen von Individuen, Gruppen und Organisationen zu erforschen. Um Veränderungen über die Zeit in Netzwerken analysieren zu können braucht es zum einen Konzepte und Tools zur Beschreibung und Organisation veränderlicher Netzwerkdaten und zum anderen spezielle Algorithmen, um Veränderung auf struktureller Ebene überhaupt erkennen zu können. Zur Analyse darunterliegende Dynamiken von Veränderungen können Netzwerksimulationen herangezogen werden. Dieser Vortrag führt in Konzepte dynamischer Netzwerkanalyse ein und zeigt Ansätze, wie strukturelle Veränderungen erforscht werden können. Am Beispiel der Verbreitung von Meinungen und Überzeugungen wird zudem gezeigt, wie Agentenbasierte Simulation auf Netzwerke angewandt werden kann, um damit Dynamiken in menschlichen Kommunikationsnetzwerken zu analysieren.
Jürgen Pfeffer ist Assistant Research Professor an der School of Computer Science der Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA). Pfeffer’s Forschung verbindet Netzwerkanalyse mit Theorien und Methoden aus Informationsvisualisierung, Simulation, Data Mining und Textanalyse. Sein Schwerpunkt liegt in der Entwicklung von Methoden zur Analyse von Dynamiken in großen sozialen Systemen.

Mapping and Investigating Covert Networks via Network Analysis and Text Mining
Applying network analysis to co-offender data and other types of covert networks can help to select strategic leads for further investigation and overcoming limitations with profiling. A key challenge with this approach is data collection since classic methods such as surveys, questionnaires and observations are often inapplicable. Alternatively, relevant information about covert networks can be contained in unstructured, natural language text data, such as communication data, material from court hearings, reports from subject matter experts, and data from the (participatory) web. In this talk, I present my work on methods, technologies and applications for constructing covert network data from various accounts of behavioral trace data, mainly text data, and for considering the content of information and communication data for network analysis. I provide examples from my research on the Sudan, where critical interactions include conflicts and coalitions between ethnic groups and rivalries over natural resources. I will also talk about my work on email data analysis of a corporation indicted of white- collar crime. Finally, I will touch on data privacy and security issues related to studying covert networks.

Prof. Dr. Nollert von der Universität Fribourg, der derzeit zu einem Gastaufenthalt am CGG weilt, wird zum Thema “Geschlechterspezifische Ungleichheiten in der schweizerischen Arbeitswelt” sprechen.

Academic Journal Writing Workshop for PhD students

Publishing journal articles in peer reviewed journals in English has been an increasing trend in the academia, and is nowadays a requirement for anyone wishing to have a serious career in Sociology. The skill of article writing is however not always a part of the PhD training, furthermore, there are diverse myths on what makes a good manuscript, and how to internationalize one’s research in a meaningful way. This ESA Summer School wishes to provide a platform for both learning about this specific form of writing, and a creative and supportive environment to finalize a manuscript during the course.
The Summer School is aimed to work as an aid for PhD students struggling with an article manuscript in progress. You are welcome to apply if you currently work with a manuscript. The text can be a manuscript in the finalizing stage before initial submission, or after a review process, working with the final editing. The requirement is that you have a full text in English to work on, a draft that can be circulated among participants by June 28th 2010.
The Summer School is co-organized by the Sociology Departments of University of Turku and University of Helsinki, and the ESA. The Summer School takes place in a beautiful setting in the archipelago of Finland, the Archipelago Research Institute of University of Turku in Seili, Nauvo. The venue provides a peaceful historic environment for writing and discussions, with sea, nature, and the midnight sun.

ESA covers all costs for the course, the accommodation and all meals. Students will need to cover their own travel to Turku. There are low budget flights to Turku (SAS, AirBaltic, WizzAir) and Helsinki (all major companies, 2 hours by train or bus from Turku), and a ferry connection from Stockholm. Students must bring their own computers.
