CALL FOR PAPERS
IDEAS AT WORK
25th Annual Employment Research Unit Conference, Cardiff Business School
This conference examines an often-neglected topic in employment relations: the role of ideas. We invite papers that explore how ideational factors, such as identities, values, attitudes, ideologies, world views and collective beliefs, influence employment relations and the organization and experience of work.
The field of employment relations has a strong material and rational foundation. Material factors, such as formal institutions, markets and company structures, are crucial in explaining employment relations. Much research either implicitly or explicitly assumes that the collective actors, management and unionists, have the rational capacity to develop the best course of action in a given material context. The goal of the conference is to go beyond a narrow focus on material structures and rational actors and explore the role of ideas at work.
The conference will take place on 13-14 September 2010 at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff UK.
Abstracts of conference submissions of 500 words in length should be submitted to Edmund Heery and Marco Hauptmeier by 15th April 2010.
Full papers should be submitted for distribution to participants by 2nd August 2010.
The British Journal of Industrial Relations is planning to publish a special issue on the conference topic. If you are interested in having your conference paper considered by the journal for a possible special issue then it should be submitted to BJIR by 31st October 2010.
