Registration open: 3rd European User Conference for EU-LFS and EU-SILC, 21- 22 March 2013

The 3rd European User Conference for EU-LFS and EU-SILC (21- 22 March 2013, Mannheim) provides an international forum for the exchange of research based on EU-LFS or EU-SILC data. An important aim of the conference is to bring together people not only to encourage the discussion within the research community on both substantive and methodological issues, but also to offer researchers the opportunity to give feedback to Eurostat.

Conference sessions will focus on effects of social policies, poverty and deprivation, quality of life, labour market issues, gender and work as well as on methodological topics. In the closing session more European microdata available for research purpose will be presented (see the programme).

The conference is financially supported by the European Commission under the FP7 project Data without Boundaries there will be no conference fee.

Data without Boundaries organizes in cooperation with Eurostat a series of three day training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets.

This second course is particularly focussed on the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) and will be hosted by the Romanian Social Data Archive at the Department of Sociology (University of Bucharest, Romania). Other partners involved in this course are GESIS (Mannheim, Germany), UK Data Archive (Essex), Réseau Quetelet (Paris), Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Paris) and Eurostat (Luxembourg).

The course is aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are seeking to conduct research on the basis of the EU-SILC. Besides highlighting the legal and administrative aspects of data access the course demonstrates the possibilities of the EU-SILC in a hands-on computer sessions which explores the potential for both international as well as longitudinal analysis by using multivariate statistical methods and SPSS/Stata.

Interested parties should send a short application letter (max. 500 words) explaining their motivations to participate in this course to 2nd-dwb-training@gesis.org. Deadline for applications is 15 January 2013. For further information please contact Christof Wolf (firsname.lastname@gesis.org).

Participants have to cover their own expenses for travel and accomodation. Attendance of the course is free.

European Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) and
European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC)

3rd European User Conference Mannheim, March 21-22, 2013

German Microdata Lab, GESIS, in cooperation with Eurostat

EU-LFS and EU-SILC are the most important official microdata for comparative social research in Europe. An increasing number of researchers use these data for a wide range of economic and social analyses. Topics addressed include e.g. the impact of the crisis on employment and unemployment, quality of work, labour migration, integration of immigrants, monetary poverty, income mobility, income inequality, material deprivation, working poor, gender gaps on the labour market, child poverty. In the context of the rapidly growing use of EU-LFS and EU-SILC data there is a need to share experience between researchers, to provide feedback to producers, but also to learn more about the way these European statistics are developed, compiled and disseminated.

The 3rd European User Conference for EU-LFS and EU-SILC, organized (Financially supported by Data without Boundaries a EU-funded project supporting equal and easy access to official microdata for the European Research Area) by the German Microdata Lab, GESIS, in cooperation with Eurostat, will provide researchers with the opportunity to present and discuss their work and share their experience. In addition to fostering the discussion within the research community on both substantive and methodological issues, the conference offers researchers the opportunity to give feedback to the European Statistical System. Eurostat will inform about the ongoing work for improving EU social statistics, in particular EU-LFS and EU-SILC.

Researchers of all disciplines (e.g. economics, demography, geography, political science, public health, and sociology) who use either EU-LFS or EU-SILC microdata are encouraged to participate and to submit an abstract. Substantive topics may include, among others, all aspects of the European labour market, living conditions, migration, income inequalities, poverty and social exclusion. Methodological topics may include e.g. questions of data quality, cross-national and inter-temporal comparability, and statistical modeling. All presentations must be comparative and include data from at least two countries.

SUBMISSIONS:

The deadline for submissions of abstracts is October 31, 2012. Proposals should be submitted online via the presentation submission form at the conference webpage (http://www.gesis.org/en/events/conferences/european-user-conference-3/submission-form/).

Abstracts should not be longer than 1000 words. The abstract should be informative, clearly state the research question, indicate the dataset(s) used and the countries analyzed. The submitters will be notified by January 15, 2013, whether their paper was accepted for presentation or not.

European workshop to introduce the EU Survey of Income and Living Conditions and the EU Labour Force Survey data

A two-day workshop organised by ESDS Government at the University of Manchester and GESIS at the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Mannheim. This workshop will give an introduction to the cross-national comparative EU-SILC and EU-LFS data. There is a registration fee of £110 (£55 for students).
