The Non-Financial Crisis: Politics, Media and Culture in the Present Economic Context
31 May, 2013, Leeds

The recent financial crisis that caused the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and the struggle of national and trans-national governments in tackling the crisis, has signalled the need for fundamental changes in economic and political systems.

In this conference we hope to interrogate the various aspects of the crisis. These aspects span beyond economic considerations to broader issues related to socio-political systems, media and cultural production. Almost all fields are affected by the crisis and forced to change. The changes in these fields are interdependent and will have important implications for our future. With this aim in mind we invite submissions which could address any of the following questions or investigate related issues:

1. Politics

  • How is the crisis changing the way leaders appeal to audiences?
  • How has the crisis influenced political agendas?
  • How have governments been dealing with the communication of the crisis?
  • Has the crisis brought about new forms of political action?
  • Is the economic crisis encouraging citizen participation?
  • Is it still possible for the public sphere to influence national government in times of transnational crisis?
  • Has the crisis in anyway influenced the legitimacy of transnational institutions?

2. Media and Journalism

  • How has the media represented the crisis?
  • What are the challenges for communicating the crisis?
  • Have journalistic practices changed due to the influence of the crisis?
  • How have the economic crisis and budget cuts influenced media production?
  • Have new media changed the way news is produced and distributed during crisis?
  • Will the media play a different role in society after the crisis?
  • Has new media been shrinking or expanding disparity between the North and the South during the crisis?

3. Culture

  • Cultural labour and value creation: what impact has the crisis had on the dynamic between creative autonomy and market imperatives?
  • Are the creative industries more resilient to the impact of the economic crisis than traditional manufacturing industries?
  • What might the implications be of public subsidy cuts for culture and the cultural labour market?
  • What roles can the cultural and creative industries play in promoting job creation and economic growth?
  • Could the cultural industries play a real and significant role in the development and adoption of new socioeconomic models?
  • Where does the culture industry debate lie today: what have been the effects of the commodification of culture?
  • What is art’s relationship to social change? Is there legitimate faith in the autonomy of art as bound to the promise of a better world to come?
  • What might be the outcomes of the economic crisis for European culture?

Please email 250-300 word abstract, with any institutional affiliation and brief biography, to the following email address by March 1, 2013 (earlier submissions welcome):

Call for Papers: 4th International Workshop on Modeling Social Media (MSM’2013)

CALL FOR PAPERS
4th International Workshop on Modeling Social Media (MSM’2013)
Mining, Modeling and Recommending “Things” in Social Media

http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/ws/msm2013/
to be held on May 1, 2013, Paris, France
co-located with ACM Hypertext 2013

Important Dates:

  • Submission Deadline: Feb 04, 2013
  • Notification of Acceptance: Feb 18, 2013
  • Final Papers Due: February 28, 2013
  • Workshop date: May 1, 2013

In our first workshop on Modeling Social Media (MSM 2010 in Toronto, Canada), we explored various different models of social media ranging from user modeling, hypertext models, software engineering models, sociological models and framework models. In our second workshop (MSM 2011 in Boston, USA), we addressed the user interface aspects of modeling social media. In our third workshop (MSM 2012 in Milwaukee, USA), we looked at the collective intelligence in social media, i.e. making sense of the content and context from social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Foursquare by analyzing tweets, tags, blog posts, likes, posts and check-ins, in order to create a new knowledge and semantic meaning. With this year’s workshop we aim to attract researchers from all over the world working in the field of social media mining, modeling and end-user applications. In particular, we would like to invite researchers working on the important field of “recommender systems” for social media which is gaining more and more in importance due to the increasing information overload problem.

The goal of this workshop is to continue our vibrant discussion on social media mining and modelling with a special focus on recommender systems for social media applications. Hence, the workshop aims to attract and discuss various novel aspects of social media mining, modelling and doing recommendations on top of these data/models. In short the workshop invites topics such as social media mining methods/techniques, novel approaches to model users or things in social media, frameworks to harvest and/or display social media data and new social media recommender methods/techniques/algorithms or interfaces supporting users for instance in information finding, meta-data application etc. Thus, our goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners from all over the world with diverse backgrounds interested in 1) exploring different perspectives and approaches to mine (complex) and analyse social media data, 2) modelling social media users and 3) building applications such as recommender systems on top of this data/models.

We invite submissions which may include the following topics, but are not limited to:

  • novel mining methods/techniques or approaches for social media
  • novel approaches to model users or things in social media
  • novel frameworks to harvest and/or display social media data
  • novel recommender methods/techniques/algorithms or interfaces to recommend “things” to people in social media
  • new visualisation approaches for recommender systems in social media
  • evaluation methods/techniques/reports for mining/modelling or recommending things/people in social media
  • privacy and security issues or constraints in social media mining/modelling and recommendations
  • scalability issues of mining, modelling and recommending people/things/etc. in social media
  • novel (social media) datasets (incl. a detailed description) which are of potential interest for researchers all over the world working in the field of social media mining/modelling/analytics and/or recommender systems

Submissions: We solicit short position papers (1-2 pages) and peer-reviewed research papers (4-8 pages) in the ACM conference paper style.

Please submit your papers using the EasyChair system at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=msm2013.

Call for Papers: Studium ohne Abitur – Studium und Berufsverlauf nicht-traditioneller Studierender

Call for Papers

Studium ohne Abitur:
Studium und Berufsverlauf nicht-traditioneller Studierender

Fachtagung für Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen und Forscher/innen
am 12. – 13. September 2013 an der Universität Hamburg
Von-Melle-Park 8, 20146 Hamburg

19. April 2013

per E-Mail erbeten an:

Conference
“Ethnic Diversity and Social Capital: Mechanisms, Conditions and Causality”

Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) May 24 and 25, 2013

The debate on trust, cooperation, and civic engagement in ethnically diverse communities has proliferated rapidly over the last decade. Dozens of studies have been conducted, covering a variety of countries and levels of analysis, across a range of indicators of social capital, and using divergent operationalizations of diversity. The outcomes of these studies have been almost as varied as their research designs.

The time has come to draw up the balance, in order to identify both what we have learned, and what has remained unresolved. In doing so, we want to move beyond the somewhat dreary and inconclusive discussion of the mere absence or presence of correlations between diversity and social capital. More can be gained by focusing more closely on the causal mechanisms linking the two, and on moderating factors that point towards conditional effects of diversity.

In order to achieve this aim, we want to bring together leading scholars who carry out cutting-edge research on the mechanisms and conditions of diversity effects. For this two-day event, we invite about 20 scholars from several disciplines to present new and unpublished studies on the linkages between ethnic diversity and social capital.

If you would like to present your ongoing research on the mechanisms and conditions of diversity effects at the WZB, please submit your proposal until February 17, 2013 at http://www.wzb.eu/mad/call-for-papers.

In case of successful application, we cover travel expenses and accommodation in Berlin (based on economy fare and up to three nights of accommodation).

The confirmed list of speakers includes:
Dietlind Stolle, McGill University, and Miles Hewstone, University of Oxford (Keynote speakers); Peter Thisted Dinesen, University of Copenhagen; Frank Kalter, University of Mannheim; Karen Schönwälder, Sören Petermann and Jörg Hüttermann, MPIMMG Göttingen; Eric M. Uslaner, University of Maryland; Susanne Veit, WZB.

REMINDER

Ableism, Racism and Conflicts of Participation and Inclusion in Society and the Labour Market
International Conference on Linking Concepts of Critical Ableism and Racism Studies with Research on Conflicts of Participation – June 6-8, 2013

NEW DEADLINE
January 30th 2013 Abstract submission deadline

Network and Centre of Participation Research, University of Hamburg Prof. Dr. Marianne Pieper
Jamal Haji Mohammadi, Gesa Mayer, Till Telake

While anti-discrimination laws and the UN Disability Rights Convention provide legal guarantees anchoring the right to self-determination and inclusion in all sectors of society, these guarantees have yet to be realised in practice.

Central to this conference is the question of implementation of the rights of marginalised people to inclusion, self-determination and participation in society in general and especially in the labour market. The focus is on two central interconnected axes of difference, ableism and racism, which act as powerful social “ushers” in conjunction with other constructions of difference. Both “disability” and “migration background” are terms used colloquially and often understood as properties associated with individuals; however, what remains hidden is how they are the product of complex processes of construction. These processes can take on very different forms in different geopolitical contexts depending on the specific logics of economic valorisation as well as different political and technical conditions.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the creation of concepts as well as theoretical and methodological tools adequate to the task of analysing marginalisation and participation. An additional focus of the conference will be on the concept and practices of inclusion and a discussion of models, perspectives and policy options. The conference program is divided into three sections:

1. Theoretical and conceptual development

The aim is to explore new theoretical and methodological approaches to analysing processes of marginalisation by examining how ableism and racism interact with other axes of difference (gender, age, sexual orientation, class) in the context of specific economic conditions. How do logics of valorisation, production conditions and the labour market situation in contemporary neo-liberal economies relate to ableism, racism and other axes of difference?

2. Development of methodological perspectives / Discussion of new research designs

Creative and innovative methodologies will be presented for discussion. There will be an emphasis on theoretical concepts and research methods/research designs which neither comprehend people as simple emanations and materialisations of power logics and structures, nor view them as completely autonomous actors. The aim is rather to explore the potential offered by theoretical concepts and research designs from the fields of “neo- materialism” and complexity theory to escape the narrowness and aporias of social constructivist approaches.

3. Current empirical studies and reports from the field will be used as the basis for discussions of different forms of participation in the labour market and in everyday life.

a) Network activists will outline and discuss new perspectives and models as well as demands and opportunities for political intervention.
b) A panel discussion will allow network activists and scientists to debate new perspectives and models together with political decision-makers and representatives from business and the trade unions.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: 1st of February

Analytical sociology is an approach for understanding the social world. It is concerned with explaining societal phenomena such as social network structures, patterns of segregation, collectively shared and diffused cultural and/or political ideas or common ways of (inter-)acting in a society. It explains such phenomena not merely by relating them to other societal phenomena, but by detailing in clear and precise ways the mechanisms through which the phenomena were brought about. Parts of analytical sociology focus on action and interaction as the cogs and wheels of social processes, while others consider the dynamic social processes that these actions and interactions bring about.

We are delighted to announce that Thomas Schelling will give the keynote address of the conference. Thomas Schelling was awarded the 2005 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science for having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis. His models of segregation are widely cited and a continuing source of inspiration for analytical sociologists.

We welcome presentations using any qualitative or quantitative method that allows for the study of social mechanisms and the complex social dynamics they give rise to. In addition, we welcome purely theoretical papers dealing with central aspects of the explanatory approach of analytical sociology.

Abstracts (500 – 1000 words) should be sent to inas2013@iffs.se no later than the 1st of February 2013 and should contain the following elements:
