7th GESIS Summer School in Survey Methodology, August 2018

The program of the 7th GESIS Summer School in Survey Methodology is online and registration is open. The Summer School 2018 will be held from August 2 to 24 at GESIS in Cologne, Germany.

15 courses are scheduled, among them 5 short courses and 10 one-week courses. New to the program are courses on “Pretesting Survey Questions”, “Applied Multiple Imputation”, and “Open Science and FAIR Data”. The courses “Mixed-Mode and Mixed-Device Surveys“ and “Web Survey Design” return to the Summer School program after a break.

Thanks to our cooperation with the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences, CDSS of the University of Mannheim, participants can obtain up to 4 ECTS credit points per one-week course.

In addition to courses, we have prepared a number of plenary and social events including evening talks by experts in Survey Methodology, weekly welcome receptions as well as cultural and social excursions.

There is no registration deadline, but in order to secure a place in the course(s) of your choice and to book affordable accommodation, we strongly recommend that you register as soon as possible.

Scholarships by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) via CDSS as well as the European Survey Research Association (ESRA) are available to Summer School participants.

Course Overview:
The course will cover methods for drawing causal inference in interventional, non‐
experimental/non‐randomized studies on quality of care with administrative data. In order to control for confounders between intervention and control group, at first simple methods (such as stratification and standardization) as well as advanced methods (Propensity Score Matching, Difference‐in‐Differences, Regression‐Discontinuity Designs) are taught. The course will also give an overview on common risk‐adjustment instruments (generic and disease specific risk‐adjustment scores based on diagnoses or ATC codes) for use with health outcomes.

The course will be split in theoretical and practical sessions. During the practical sessions we are going to implement the discussed estimators with STATA. Hence, a basic knowledge of STATA (data handling, running do‐files, etc.) is a prerequisite for the course. If you are not familiar with STATA you might want to check the online introduction from the UCLA Institute for Digital Research and Education https://stats.idre.ucla.edu/stata/. The relevant estimation commands and ado‐files will be explained during the course; some of them require STATA 13 or higher.

Assessment: Students will have to complete an assignment doing (statistical) analyses of a dataset. Results have to be presented in the form of a short summary paper.

Course Overview & Contents:
The course discusses the basic steps of performing behavioral research. We start with discussing critical assumptions of game theoretic models. We then show how research hypotheses can be inferred from behavioral models and how these hypotheses may be tested in lab studies. Critical design factors of laboratory experiments and the most commonly applied statistical tests will be presented.
We will further visit the Lab at the UHH while discussing options (e.g. eye-tracking) and limits
(e.g. subject pool, size of the lab) for conducting lab experiments at UHH. The course also provides an overview of commonly applied software tools that are used for behavioral modelling (Maple), software for computerized experiments (z-Tree), and statistical analysis (Stata). Ethical aspects of conducting laboratory experiments underpin the theoretical/fundamental part of this course.
Based on these theoretical foundations, participants are asked to design an experiment. The
presentations will be the basis for passing/failing the course. The topic of the experiment is
open. We may also suggest a topic. If this is the case, please send your research interest along
with the registration.

Prerequisites: Basic background in microeconomics, game theory and statistics.

Assessment: Assessment will be based on active participation. Grading for students
of University of Hamburg will be pass/fail.

Quantitative Forschungswerkstatt für Studierende, Promovierende und Post-Docs

In dieser Forschungswerkstatt bringen Sie Ihre empirische Arbeit einen großen Schritt voran: Sie stellen Ihre Arbeit vor und bekommen fundierte Antworten auf die aktuell offenen Fragen und Unsicherheiten. Mit dem Feedback der beiden Referentinnen und der Teilnehmer arbeiten Sie anschließend direkt an Ihren Daten und Analysen weiter. Dabei werden Sie von den Referentinnen unterstützt, die Ihnen Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe geben. Sie bekommen Unterstützung bei der Auswahl der passenden statistischen Methoden, der Umsetzung mit der Statistiksoftware (konkret für die Software R, SPSS und Mplus), bei der Ergebnisinterpretation und Formulierung und Darstellung der Resultate. Zudem wird es Gelegenheit geben, Teile Ihrer Arbeit von anderen Teilnehmern Korrektur lesen zu lassen, so dass Sie auch in schriftlicher Form Feedback zu Ihrer Arbeit erhalten.

Ablauf:
Damit die Forschungswerkstatt für Sie persönlich zu einem individuellen Gewinn wird, können Sie den Ablauf aktiv mitgestalten:
Sie reichen – sofern von Ihnen gewünscht (!) – ein 3-seitiges Abstract Ihrer Master- oder Bachelorarbeit, Ihrer Dissertation bzw. Ihrer sonstigen Forschungsarbeit ein inkl. den aktuell offenen Fragen und Sie erhalten bis 28.02.2018 ein Feedback auf Ihr Abstract von den Referentinnen.
Am Freitag, den 02. März 2018 starten wir um 17.00 Uhr mit einem Input-Vortrag zu einem von Ihnen gewählten Thema rund um Ihre Arbeiten. Bei einem gemütlichen und stärkenden Abendessen besteht dann die Gelegenheit, sich auszutauschen, kennenzulernen und zu vernetzen.
Am Samstag, den 03. März 2018 Sie können – sofern gewünscht – Ihre fertigen Arbeiten, Ihre Konzepte oder bereits vorhandene Zwischenergebnisse vor den anderen Teilnehmern präsentieren und Sie arbeiten eingenständig (unter Hilfestellung) und/oder in Kleingruppen an den eigenen empirischen Daten weiter. Am späten Nachmittag erhalten Sie die Gelegenheit einen Teil Ihrer Arbeit auch an andere Teilnehmer zu geben, um auch von diesen Feedback zu erhalten.
Am Sonntag, den 04. März 2018 können Sie direkt mit dem Feedback des Vortages in die weitergehende Bearbeitung Ihres Projektes einsteigen. Hier wird für die verbleibenden Teilnehmer Zeit sein – sofern gewünscht – die eigene Arbeit vor den anderen Teilnehmern zu präsentieren und wir werden eingenständig (unter Hilfestellung) und/oder in Kleingruppen an den eigenen Daten weiterarbeiten. Zum Abschluss präsentieren wir wertvolle Tipps zur Darstellung der Ergebnisse in Veröffentlichungen und Präsentationen.

Auch eine passive Teilnahme d.h. ohne konkretes Forschungsanliegen und/oder konkretes Datenmaterial ist möglich!
