Conference
“Ethnic Diversity and Social Capital: Mechanisms, Conditions and Causality”

Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) May 24 and 25, 2013

The debate on trust, cooperation, and civic engagement in ethnically diverse communities has proliferated rapidly over the last decade. Dozens of studies have been conducted, covering a variety of countries and levels of analysis, across a range of indicators of social capital, and using divergent operationalizations of diversity. The outcomes of these studies have been almost as varied as their research designs.

The time has come to draw up the balance, in order to identify both what we have learned, and what has remained unresolved. In doing so, we want to move beyond the somewhat dreary and inconclusive discussion of the mere absence or presence of correlations between diversity and social capital. More can be gained by focusing more closely on the causal mechanisms linking the two, and on moderating factors that point towards conditional effects of diversity.

In order to achieve this aim, we want to bring together leading scholars who carry out cutting-edge research on the mechanisms and conditions of diversity effects. For this two-day event, we invite about 20 scholars from several disciplines to present new and unpublished studies on the linkages between ethnic diversity and social capital.

If you would like to present your ongoing research on the mechanisms and conditions of diversity effects at the WZB, please submit your proposal until February 17, 2013 at http://www.wzb.eu/mad/call-for-papers.

In case of successful application, we cover travel expenses and accommodation in Berlin (based on economy fare and up to three nights of accommodation).

The confirmed list of speakers includes:
Dietlind Stolle, McGill University, and Miles Hewstone, University of Oxford (Keynote speakers); Peter Thisted Dinesen, University of Copenhagen; Frank Kalter, University of Mannheim; Karen Schönwälder, Sören Petermann and Jörg Hüttermann, MPIMMG Göttingen; Eric M. Uslaner, University of Maryland; Susanne Veit, WZB.

Ruud Koopmans, Bram Lancee, Merlin Schaeffer (WZB)

Ableism, Racism and Conflicts of Participation and Inclusion in Society and the Labour Market
International Conference on Linking Concepts of Critical Ableism and Racism Studies with Research on Conflicts of Participation – June 6-8, 2013

NEW DEADLINE
January 30th 2013 Abstract submission deadline

Network and Centre of Participation Research, University of Hamburg Prof. Dr. Marianne Pieper
Jamal Haji Mohammadi, Gesa Mayer, Till Telake

While anti-discrimination laws and the UN Disability Rights Convention provide legal guarantees anchoring the right to self-determination and inclusion in all sectors of society, these guarantees have yet to be realised in practice.

Central to this conference is the question of implementation of the rights of marginalised people to inclusion, self-determination and participation in society in general and especially in the labour market. The focus is on two central interconnected axes of difference, ableism and racism, which act as powerful social “ushers” in conjunction with other constructions of difference. Both “disability” and “migration background” are terms used colloquially and often understood as properties associated with individuals; however, what remains hidden is how they are the product of complex processes of construction. These processes can take on very different forms in different geopolitical contexts depending on the specific logics of economic valorisation as well as different political and technical conditions.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the creation of concepts as well as theoretical and methodological tools adequate to the task of analysing marginalisation and participation. An additional focus of the conference will be on the concept and practices of inclusion and a discussion of models, perspectives and policy options. The conference program is divided into three sections:

1. Theoretical and conceptual development

The aim is to explore new theoretical and methodological approaches to analysing processes of marginalisation by examining how ableism and racism interact with other axes of difference (gender, age, sexual orientation, class) in the context of specific economic conditions. How do logics of valorisation, production conditions and the labour market situation in contemporary neo-liberal economies relate to ableism, racism and other axes of difference?

2. Development of methodological perspectives / Discussion of new research designs

Creative and innovative methodologies will be presented for discussion. There will be an emphasis on theoretical concepts and research methods/research designs which neither comprehend people as simple emanations and materialisations of power logics and structures, nor view them as completely autonomous actors. The aim is rather to explore the potential offered by theoretical concepts and research designs from the fields of “neo- materialism” and complexity theory to escape the narrowness and aporias of social constructivist approaches.

3. Current empirical studies and reports from the field will be used as the basis for discussions of different forms of participation in the labour market and in everyday life.

a) Network activists will outline and discuss new perspectives and models as well as demands and opportunities for political intervention.
b) A panel discussion will allow network activists and scientists to debate new perspectives and models together with political decision-makers and representatives from business and the trade unions.

Call for Workshops: Workshops at the 7th International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media Boston, MA, USA, July 8-11 2013

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS
WORKSHOPS AT THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL AAAI CONFERENCE ON WEBLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA BOSTON, MA, USA, JULY 8-11 2013
SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The ICWSM-13 Committee invites proposals for Workshops Day at the Seventh International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-13). The Workshops Day will be held on the last day of the conference on July 11, 2013 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus — providing an informal setting for active exchange among social scientists, computer scientists, and other researchers and developers.

Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with 25–50 participants. Attendance is limited to active participants only. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers, who are encouraged to avoid a mini-conference format that is dominated by long talks and short discussions. Instead, the organizers should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants, and should encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas.

Instead, the organizers should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants, and should encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas.

Workshops can be a half-day or full-day in length. A half-day workshop is assumed unless you specify otherwise in your proposal.

PROPOSAL CONTENT
Proposals for workshops should be no more than three (3) pages in length, and should contain the following:

  • A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific issues and research questions the workshop will focus on.
  • A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time and a list of proposed workshop activities that distinguish it from a mini-conference (e.g. games, brainstorming, etc).
  • A list of related workshops held previously at related conferences and a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from or how it follows-up on work presented at previous workshops.
  • A brief description of the proposed workshop format, regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion.
  • An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting.
  • The names and full contact information (email and postal addresses, fax and phone numbers) of the organizing committee — three or four people knowledgeable in the field — and short descriptions of their relevant expertise. (Please specify main contact.) Strong proposals include organizers who bring differing perspectives to the workshop topic and who are actively connected to the communities of potential participants.
  • A list of potential attendees.

Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, for bridging the gaps between the social science and technology fields or between subfields of social media research, for elucidating the results of exploratory research, or for critiquing existing approaches. Because workshops are intended for focused exploration of special topics, topics that are already the subject of regular meetings are not appropriate.

WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION
Workshop organizers will be responsible for the following:

  • Producing a call for submissions/participation. The call for papers is due January 18, 2013; due to the short turnaround time, you should create a draft in tandem with your proposal. Organizers are responsible for additional publicity such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the ICWSM community. Organizers are encouraged to maintain their own web site.
  • Selecting participants. Workshop attendance is by invitation of the organizers. Selection of attendees will be made by the organizers on the basis of submissions due March 18, 2013. Workshop organizers will need to provide ICWSM-13 with a preliminary list of the participants on April 1, 2013.
  • Coordinating the production of the workshop papers and abstracts. AAAI coordinates the collection, production, and distribution of the technical reports or working notes for the workshops. Workshop papers and abstracts must be received by AAAI no later than April 1, 2013, and volumes are limited to a total of 200 pages.

Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through the AAAI Press. The Press (which retains the right of first refusal to publish) will furnish details of its program to interested organizers and authors.

ICWSM will provide logistical support, and meeting places for the workshops, and will determine the dates and times of the workshops.

ICWSM reserves the right to drop any workshop if the organizers miss the above deadlines. Workshops are not to be used as a vehicle for marketing products. A reduced workshop registration fee will be offered to ICWSM-13 technical program registrants.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Proposals must be received by January 9, 2013. Decisions about the Workshops Day program will be made by January 16, 2013. Submissions must be in PDF format and can be made via the EasyChair conference system

CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: 1st of February

Analytical sociology is an approach for understanding the social world. It is concerned with explaining societal phenomena such as social network structures, patterns of segregation, collectively shared and diffused cultural and/or political ideas or common ways of (inter-)acting in a society. It explains such phenomena not merely by relating them to other societal phenomena, but by detailing in clear and precise ways the mechanisms through which the phenomena were brought about. Parts of analytical sociology focus on action and interaction as the cogs and wheels of social processes, while others consider the dynamic social processes that these actions and interactions bring about.

We are delighted to announce that Thomas Schelling will give the keynote address of the conference. Thomas Schelling was awarded the 2005 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science for having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis. His models of segregation are widely cited and a continuing source of inspiration for analytical sociologists.

We welcome presentations using any qualitative or quantitative method that allows for the study of social mechanisms and the complex social dynamics they give rise to. In addition, we welcome purely theoretical papers dealing with central aspects of the explanatory approach of analytical sociology.

Abstracts (500 – 1000 words) should be sent to inas2013@iffs.se no later than the 1st of February 2013 and should contain the following elements:

Call for Abstracts for the Session “Transnational Networks” at the XXXIII. Sunbelt Conference, May 21 – 26, 2013 in Hamburg, Germany

Transnational networks – Call for Abstracts for a session at the XXXIII. Sunbelt Conference, May 21 – 26, 2013 in Hamburg, Germany

organized by Andreas Herz, Sören Petermann and José Luis Molina

Transnational studies focus on the border-crossing activities of individuals, migrant groups, corporations and social movements. A central innovation of the concept “transnationalism” depends on a perspective which refers to cross-border relationships and networks. E.g. looking at personal networks it can be seen that more and more people have highly transnationally dispersed relationship structures wherein the “social” is only partly routed in the “local”. Especially relational approaches and social network analysis (SNA) allow reconsidering and researching the cross-cutting transfer of ideas, transnational support as well as the formation of opinions and lifestyles beyond different geographical spaces and nation states. We invite presentations to discuss the transnational and geographically dispersed social formations form a network perspective. Possible questions are:

  • What role do cross-border social networks play to migration, mobility, science and entrepreneurship?
  • What is the structure of cross-border formations? What role does transnationality play for the provision of different resources?
  • Which network approaches can be addressed in observing transnational distribution of networks? What measures have potential to express structure of transnationality?
  • How can network analysis help to understand the interrelationship between social space and transnational and/ or geographical space? What is the relation between distance and transnationality?

Submission will be closing on December 31 at 11:59:59 EST. Please limit your abstract to 250 words. Proceed to abstract submission: http://www.abstractserver.com/sunbelt2013/absmgm/

When submitting your abstract, please select “Transnational networks” as session title in the drop down box on the submission site. To be extra sure please put a note in the “additional notes” box on the abstract submission form that states Andreas Herz, Sören Petermann and José Luis Molina as the session organizers.
