The conferences have become a unique and respected forum in computer and information systems technology for the exchange of ideas among researchers and development communities in North America, Asia and the Pacific Basin nations, Europe, and the Middle East.

Waikoloa, Hawaii, January 6-9, 2014

HICSS 2014 Track on Information Technology in Healthcare
Minitrack: Sensing and Pervasive Technologies and Applications for Healthcare

Description

There are two key challenges in today’s healthcare system: One is the significant cost pressure on healthcare delivery and the second is the rapid growth of the field of medical informatics and e-health, increasingly using sensing and pervasive technologies. In addition there is a trend to foster active patient participation in their care. Patients of all ages are becoming more and more familiar with technology, especially mobile devices. Therefore it is prudent to look at the application of such technologies for healthcare with the goal to facilitate value-driven healthcare delivery.

Here, a new field of research is evolving which is focused on sensing and pervasive technologies for healthcare. This rapidly growing area is expected to play an increasingly important role for healthcare globally. Reasons for this include: the higher mobility of individuals, the need to have active and empowered patients, the pressure to provide effective and efficient care, the growth in chronic diseases and therefore the demand for appropriate applications to monitor and manage these diseases. Sensing and pervasive technologies generate large amounts of data. This big data is a bonanza for enhancing insights into healthcare processes as well as for improving healthcare IT. This minitrack has been designed to provide an outlet for research in this nascent area. Selected papers will be fast-tracked for a special issue in Health and Technology published by Springer.

Completed and research in progress papers are welcomed that focus on any topic within this discipline. In particular broad categories of suitable papers include but are not limited to:

  • Network-centric design of applications using sensing and pervasive technologies
  • Biomedical applications based on sensor data
  • Sensor-based devices for treatment tracking and tracing
  • Big data analytics of heterogeneous health data
  • Online social networks and health 2.0
  • Persuasive technologies and applications
  • Apps development and service-orientated architectures
  • Theories and studies supporting successful design, development, and implementation
  • Methodologies and frameworks to support self-care
  • Chronic disease management and preventative solutions
  • Developing business models and cost-effective concepts for pervasive healthcare

Important dates

  • NOW Submission opens
  • May 1, 2013 Authors are encouraged to submit an extended abstract (1-2 pages) to the minitrack chairs via e-mail for early reactions and guidance

Sunbelt XXXIII: Call for Workshop Proposals (Deadline: October 31, 2012)

The Sunbelt XXXIII program committee is soliciting workshop proposals for the upcoming 2013 conference in Hamburg, Germany. Workshops precede the conference and are typically one half-day to one full-day in length. They feature a participant-centered and highly interactive approach. Workshops cover topics and skills that are important to researchers who use social network analysis and provide substantive training and opportunities for practice and critical discussion. Workshops will take place May 21–22, 2013.

Workshop submissions are due by 31 October 2012. No proposals can be accepted after this date.

IAB Graduate Program: “The German Establishments’ Personnel Strategies during the Great Recession”

Date: November  21, 2012 , 09:00 – 17:00,  IAB Nuremberg

Institution: Graduate Programme (GradAB) at the Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB), Nuremberg

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Lutz Bellmann

The economic recession 2008/09 was associated with severe employment losses in many countries whereas Germany exhibits a strong resilience on the labor market. In contrast to other countries the effects of the crisis were largely restricted to export-oriented industries. Firms in those industries suffered from a shortage of skilled personnel before the crisis. Although studies indicate that the crisis was associated with declining wages, they appear not to have been the primary adjustment channel in establishments that could easily reduce labor costs by decreasing working hours (e.g., those operating working-time accounts) or had access to short-time allowance schemes or concluded company-level pacts for employment and competitiveness. These topics are discussed on the basis of recently published articles in the seminar. Last but not least the effects of the Great Recession on human capital formation at the establishment level are considered.

The Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) is a longitudinal study of private households in Germany. The panel provides information on all household members and was started in 1984. In 2010, there were almost 11,000 households, and more than 19,000 persons sampled. Some of the many topics include household composition, occupational biographies, employment, earnings, health, well being, integration, values, lifestyles, and personality. The course gives an overview of the data structure and the research designs facilitated by longitudinal household studies that go beyond conventional surveys (household analysis, intergenerational analysis, life course research, etc.). In hands-on sessions using Stata, the course provides an applied introduction into the data retrieval, the construction of longitudinal data files, and illustrates some exemplary analyses.

GESIS-Summer School Survey Methodology

GESIS-Summer School Survey Methodology

9-25 August 2012, Cologne, Germany

Objectives

Surveys are the main method of systematic data collection in the Social Sciences. Surveys provide empirical data for researchers to analyse, and are an important source of information for business, charities and policy makers. There are numerous types of surveys suited for different purposes. Given the variety and complexity of survey research, designing and conducting a survey that effectively and efficiently serves a specific purpose requires specialised expertise and skill (as well as a good team). The GESIS Summer School offers high quality training in state of the art techniques and methods of survey research. It aims to equip participants with essential skills in the design, planning, execution, documentation and quality assurance of surveys of households, individuals or organisations.
