2nd DwB Training Course
Working with data from official statistics in Europe – EU-SILC
13-15 February 2013, Romania

Data without Boundaries (DwB) organizes in cooperation with Eurostat a series of three day training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets.

This second course is particularly focused on the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) and will be hosted by the Romanian Social Data Archive at the Department of Sociology (University of Bucharest, Romania). Other partners involved in this course are GESIS (Mannheim, Germany), UK Data Archive (Essex), Réseau Quetelet (Paris), Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Paris) and Eurostat (Luxembourg).

The course is aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are seeking to conduct research on the basis of the EU-SILC. Besides highlighting the legal and administrative aspects of data access the course demonstrates the possibilities of the EU-SILC in a hands-on computer sessions which explores the potential for both international as well as longitudinal analysis by using multivariate statistical methods and SPSS/Stata.

41st GESIS Spring Seminar: Topics in Social Science Data Analysis: Causality, Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS and Mplus

The Spring Seminar is a training course for social scientists interested in advanced techniques of data analysis and in the application of these techniques to data. The Seminar comprises lectures, exercises and practical work using personal computers. While in the lectures the logic of models and the corresponding analysis strategies will be explained, during the exercises and in the practical work the participants are given the op- portunity to apply these methods to data.
The seminar covers three modules of one week each, to some extent basing on each other. The courses can be booked either separately or as a block. The detailed programme is also published at the GESIS webpage http://www.gesis.org/en/events/gesis-spring-seminar.

Seminar fee and payment:

The participation fee is 240,00 € per week; reductions or refunds are not possible except for students and Ph.D. candidates without work contract (or civil servant status), who receive a reduction of one third of the fee, if they can officially document their status. Details concerning the payment will be given after registration.

Travel costs, accommodation and meals are not included. Please make your own arrangements (we will send some information when you have registered).

Contents:
Starting with a basic level introduction to R and its concepts the course will cover typical problems arising in research using statistical tools. Focus will be on the tool R itself, not on the underlying statistics. Nevertheless procedures for descriptive statistics, regression, and time series analysis methods will be given in the examples. Following a ‘natural’ workflow for statisticians the course will cover reading (and cleaning) data, generating graphs and reports, defining functions for repetitive work and keeping research reproducible.

Contents:

The course is designed to provide a more advanced knowledge of Stata 10. Those who are already experienced in using Stata for data analysis and attended the ‘Introduction to Stata’ course or be familiar with the contents will benefit most from the course. Further, it is assumed that participants will have a working knowledge of basic statistics. However, the course is not focussed on statistical content, but on data management skills. By the end of the course, students should be able to use Stata 10 efficiently through using a broader range of complex commands, understanding and using matrices, scalars and macros and produce formatted outputs.

Teaching practice will consist of tutorials and practical sessions (exercises).

  • Short review on basics
  • How to reshape and create data sets
  • Advanced functions and commands: using egen, _N, _n
  • Structure of loopings: while, foreach and forvalues
  • Managing and creating matrices
  • Understanding and using: scalars, macros and arguments
