GESIS: Einführung in die Kontextanalyse (16-.18.09.2013)

Leitung: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Friedrichs, Prof. Dr. Alexandra Nonnenmacher

Datum: 16. – 18. September

Teilnehmeranzahl: 16

Ortrud Leßmann (Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg):
“Reconceptualizing Sustainable Development on the Basis of the Capability Approach – A Model and Its Difficulties” (“Nachhaltigkeit, Gerechtigkeit und Entwicklung – ein Konzept auf der Grundlage des Capability Ansatzes“)

Diskutant: Wenzel Matiaske (Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg))

Abstract (zusammen mit Felix Rauschmayer; veröffentlicht in: Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, 2013,Vol. 14, No. 1):

This article sketches a re-conceptualization of sustainable development (SD) on the basis of Sen’s capability approach (CA). The notion of sustainable development was developed as a compromise in a political process and has been reinterpreted (some say diluted) again and again over the last 20 years. When modelling the notion through the lenses of the capability approach, difficulties occur that are at the core of SD and of CA or that are due to their combination. This article shows why it is not easy to replace ‘needs’ in the Brundtland definition of SD with ‘capabilities’. In our model, the differences between systemic and individual levels become clear and herewith the necessity to include both when dealing with issues of SD. The most salient difficulties relate to the multidimensionality and dynamics on both levels. Confronted with these difficulties, demanding individuals to consciously choose sustainable actions seems to be heroic. We propose two ways to alleviate the cognitive and moral burden on individuals by concentrating on the natural environment and by introducing collective institutions. Both alleviations are far from evident, however; this concerns their justification as well as their operationalization.

7th International Research Workshop “Methods for PhD” near Flensburg, September 29 – October 4, 2013

Empirical research is seeking through methodological processes to discover, hopefully, nontrivial facts and insights. Beside choosing a topic and grounding an idea in theory, empirical research consists of gathering and analysing data as well as presenting results in scientific contexts in order to contribute new issues to the body of acquired knowledge – not only to someone‘s own but also to that of others.

Our workshop tackles these steps of your research project:

  • Gathering data via (un)structured interviews and analysing standardized survey data,
  • >using the computer for qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

These steps will strengthen the cooperation in empirical research to boost and streamline ones project.

The regular workshop fee is 395 Euro (including meals and accommodation at Sankelmark). The workshop fee is 245 Euro without accommodation at Sankelmark (only meals are included).

It is possible to get a certificate on the credit points (according to the European Credit Transfer System).

Governing Innovation: Using Social Network Analysis

In today’s globalized economy, organizations are increasingly spanning geographical, cultural and organizational boundaries to accomplish work, supported by an integrated information technology infrastructure. For the global corporation, working well across boundaries, especially to innovate, is a necessity to stay ahead of the competition and survive. Yet in these global companies it is increasingly difficult to understand or to manage the extended communication networks through which innovation emerges and is brought to the marketplace.

The purpose of this lecture is to share the social network analysis approach and results of a five-year, National Science Foundation funded study that addresses a central business problem – how to accelerate the adoption of new ideas, processes and technologies when organizations depend on the speed of implementation to be competitive. The project team from Wayne State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago worked in partnership with information technology professionals from Ford Motor Company and Visteon. The team harnessed information in real time that already flows through a company’s information technology infrastructure to create seven metrics that are promising, accurate indicators of collaboration and team performance in an innovation network. The research results have wide applicability and benefit for governing distributed collaborative innovation using a social network analysis tools and techniques in organizations of all kinds.

Business anthropology has had a long tradition in network analysis and can have an increasingly important role to play in the future in fostering an understanding of micro organizational processes and contextual variation in both meanings and behaviors in global networked organizations. To understand global organizing, especially in the postindustrial or post-bureaucratic organizations that are enabled by information technology (IT), mixing research methods is a good way to accomplish both depth and breadth of understanding and to keep pace with emerging patterns and meanings. Quantitative and qualitative methods, automated IT-based data collection and indepth ethnography, are complementary and are important considerations in research design for studying networked organizations going forward. The IT-based analytics can tell us much about how networks are structured and how they evolve as well as about the central messages that flow through the communication networks. However, anthropology and the ethnographic tradition in network analysis can play a critical role in the future to help uncover new patterns of work, emergent roles, and different meanings for work and relationships within global networks.
