The theory of path dependence is attracting increasing attention. A considerable number of scholars have been using the theory for the study of historical imprints, escalating dynamics and organizational inertia in different fields and on different levels. The conference is organized by the Path Dependence Research Centre (Pfadkolleg) of the Freie Universität Berlin. It aims at providing a platform for the discussion of most recent path-related research.

Managementforschung 25: Management zwischen Reflexion und Handeln

Die Managementforschung steht seit Anbeginn in einem unauflöslichen Spannungsverhältnis: dem zwischen Reflexion und Handeln. Auf der einen Seite richtet sie sich als Managementlehre auf die Fragen effizienter und effektiver Steuerungshandlungen in und von Organisationen. Auf der anderen Seite bietet sie gerade dieser Praxis als Wissenschaft einen Reflexionsinstanz und macht damit die Praxis der Kritik wie der Veränderung zugänglich. Der 25. Band der ‚Managementforschung‘ widmet sich diesem gleichermaßen grundlegendem wie hochaktuellem Themenspektrum und möchte – nicht zuletzt als Jubiläumsband – zugleich eine Plattform eröffnen für elementare Fragen der Logik und Rationalität des Managements.

Background:

In recent years the great recession and Euro crisis have affected national labor markets. In most countries, unemployment has risen. In some countries austerity policies put a break on wage increases and institutional reforms have supported the generation of extended low wage sectors. This directs new attention to the workings of national minimum income systems.

The conference will present international current research on trends and developments in the fields of low wage employment and transfer receipt (e.g., welfare, unemployment or other types of benefits) and the dynamics of these patterns over time.

We are interested in studies on national developments as well as on international patterns. Both micro- and macroeconomic analyses are welcome. The conference shall focus on empirical studies but heoretical contributions are welcome as well.

Conference Fee:

The conference fee is 80€, which includes refreshments and lunches during the workshop, as well as the conference dinner on November 15, 2013. participants presenting a paper are exempted from the conference fee (one person for coauthored papers). There is a small travel grant for ph.D. students, who present a paper at the workshop and provide a letter of their supervisor that confirms their current ph.D. student status. The grant covers 50 percent of the travel cost, but the grant is limited to a maximum of € 150.

Competence-based strategic management (CBSM) employs an idiosyncratic perspective on designing and implementing processes to foster competence building and leveraging on the individual level, the group level, and the (inter-) organizational level. Rapid environmental changes – e.g. a growing convergence of customer needs, more and more close linkages between national markets, the ongoing development of IT, a changing role of distance in cross-border business activities as well as a growing importance of service orientation in business – cause a need for firms to react to these developments. The aim of this conference is to shed light on these particular competence-development processes that help firms to deal with environmental changes from different perspectives.

Minitrack: Sensing and Pervasive Technologies and Applications for Healthcare

Description

There are two key challenges in today’s healthcare system: One is the significant cost pressure on healthcare delivery and the second is the rapid growth of the field of medical informatics and e-health, increasingly using sensing and pervasive technologies. In addition there is a trend to foster active patient participation in their care. Patients of all ages are becoming more and more familiar with technology, especially mobile devices. Therefore it is prudent to look at the application of such technologies for healthcare with the goal to facilitate value-driven healthcare delivery.

Here, a new field of research is evolving which is focused on sensing and pervasive technologies for healthcare. This rapidly growing area is expected to play an increasingly important role for healthcare globally. Reasons for this include: the higher mobility of individuals, the need to have active and empowered patients, the pressure to provide effective and efficient care, the growth in chronic diseases and therefore the demand for appropriate applications to monitor and manage these diseases. Sensing and pervasive technologies generate large amounts of data. This big data is a bonanza for enhancing insights into healthcare processes as well as for improving healthcare IT. This minitrack has been designed to provide an outlet for research in this nascent area. Selected papers will be fast-tracked for a special issue in Health and Technology published by Springer.

Completed and research in progress papers are welcomed that focus on any topic within this discipline. In particular broad categories of suitable papers include but are not limited to:

• Network-centric design of applications using sensing and pervasive technologies
• Biomedical applications based on sensor data
• Sensor-based devices for treatment tracking and tracing
• Big data analytics of heterogeneous health data

Two categories of (social) scientists are invited to register for the workshop and present a paper:

(1) National program directors or their representatives (one per country).
(2) Other social scientists who analyse EVS data.

For about 20 participants, the University of Montenegro offers travel stipends. These stipends cover the costs for a hotel room for 2 nights. Eligible for these travel stipends are in particular persons from low income/weak currency countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

Warum sind einige Akteure erfolgreich und andere nicht? Wie hängen Erfolg und Leistung zusammen? Wie entstehen extreme Erfolgsungleichheiten? Die Wirtschaftssoziologie hat sich bislang nur wenig mit Konzentrationsprozessen von Erfolg beschäftigt. Dies ist überraschend, neigen doch viele Märkte zur Monopolbildung und damit zur Erfolgskonzentration. Zudem stellt die wachsende Ungleichheit von Einkommen und Vermögen ein wesentliches Merkmal gegenwärtiger Marktökonomien dar, wobei steigende Ungleichheiten gerade in entwickelten Staaten auf Konzentrationsprozesse im oberen 1-Prozent-Perzentil der Vermögensverteilung zurückzuführen sind.

Zugleich ist auf vielen Kulturgütermärkten und flexiblen Arbeitsmärkten zu beobachten, wie sich Nachfrage auf wenige Stars konzentriert, während die breite Masse der Anbieter erfolglos bleibt. So betragen die Gagen der erfolgreichsten Filmschauspieler, Autoren, Musiker oder Architekten ein Vielfaches des durchschnittlichen Einkommens ihrer Konkurrenten. Gleichzeitig hat die Mehrheit der Teilnehmer solcher „Superstarmärkte“ mit prekären Karrierebedingungen zu kämpfen.

Für die ökonomische Standardtheorie stellt die Erklärung des Zustandekommens solcher Verteilungen eine Herausforderung dar, da unter perfekten Marktbedingungen keine konzentrierten Erfolgsverteilungen zu erwarten wären. Gleichzeitig stammen die meisten Ansätze zur Erklärung konzentrierten Erfolgs bislang aus den Wirtschaftswissenschaften – soziologische Ansätze sind dagegen selten.

Diese Tagung soll dazu beitragen, das Thema einer wirtschaftssoziologischen Diskussion zu eröffnen. Erbeten werden theoretische, methodische oder empirische Vortragsvorschläge. Mögliche Themen können sein:

• Ursachen von Erfolg und Erfolgskonzentrationen
• Mechanismen der Entstehung und Verstärkung von Ungleichheit
• Messkonzepte von Erfolg, Status und Reputation
• Bestimmungsgründe legitimen oder illegitimen Erfolgs
• Kulturelle oder soziale Unterschiede in der Bewertung von Erfolgsdifferenzen
• Diffusion und Konvergenz in Nachfrage und Konsum
• Erfolgskaskaden, Pfadabhängigkeiten und Matthäus-Effekte
• Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede von Starphänomenen in verschiedenen Märkten
• Regulierungsmöglichkeiten auf Anbieter- und Nachfrageseite
• Konsequenzen von Marktveränderungen (z.B. Globalisierung) oder technischen Neuerungen (z.B. Internet) für Konzentrationsprozesse

Vortragsvorschläge werden bis zum 1. Juli 2013 erbeten. Einreichungen bitte als einseitige Abstracts (~2.500 Zeichen) per Email an beide Organisatoren, Marc Keuschnigg und Mark Lutter versenden. Eine Nachricht zur Auswahl der Vorträge erfolgt bis zum 15. Juli 2013. Bei Annahme erbeten wir die Abgabe eines vollständigen Artikels oder begleitender Vortragsfolien zum 1. Oktober 2013. Zur Anregung der Diskussion unter den Teilnehmern ist geplant, die vollständigen Artikel auf einer (passwortgeschützten) Tagungshomepage zur Verfügung zu stellen. Am Vorabend der Tagung soll ein gemeinsames Abendessen für alle Vortragenden stattfinden. Es wird keine Tagungsgebühr erhoben. Die Veranstaltung findet mit Unterstützung der Carl Friedrich Siemens Stiftung statt.

The Non-Financial Crisis: Politics, Media and Culture in the Present Economic Context

The recent financial crisis that caused the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and the struggle of national and trans-national governments in tackling the crisis, has signalled the need for fundamental changes in economic and political systems.

In this conference we hope to interrogate the various aspects of the crisis. These aspects span beyond economic considerations to broader issues related to socio-political systems, media and cultural production. Almost all fields are affected by the crisis and forced to change. The changes in these fields are interdependent and will have important implications for our future. With this aim in mind we invite submissions which could address any of the following questions or investigate related issues:

1. Politics

• How is the crisis changing the way leaders appeal to audiences?
• How has the crisis influenced political agendas?
• How have governments been dealing with the communication of the crisis?
• Has the crisis brought about new forms of political action?
• Is the economic crisis encouraging citizen participation?
• Is it still possible for the public sphere to influence national government in times of transnational crisis?
• Has the crisis in anyway influenced the legitimacy of transnational institutions?

2. Media and Journalism

• How has the media represented the crisis?
• What are the challenges for communicating the crisis?
• Have journalistic practices changed due to the influence of the crisis?
• How have the economic crisis and budget cuts influenced media production?
• Have new media changed the way news is produced and distributed during crisis?
• Will the media play a different role in society after the crisis?
• Has new media been shrinking or expanding disparity between the North and the South during the crisis?

3. Culture

• Cultural labour and value creation: what impact has the crisis had on the dynamic between creative autonomy and market imperatives?
• Are the creative industries more resilient to the impact of the economic crisis than traditional manufacturing industries?
• What might the implications be of public subsidy cuts for culture and the cultural labour market?
• What roles can the cultural and creative industries play in promoting job creation and economic growth?
• Could the cultural industries play a real and significant role in the development and adoption of new socioeconomic models?
• Where does the culture industry debate lie today: what have been the effects of the commodification of culture?
• What is art’s relationship to social change? Is there legitimate faith in the autonomy of art as bound to the promise of a better world to come?
• What might be the outcomes of the economic crisis for European culture?
